The Düsseldorf Marathon (officially named METRO Group Marathon after the main sponsor ) is a marathon in Düsseldorf that took place from 2003 to 2011 at the beginning of May and since 2012 at the end of April. The initiator of the Düsseldorf Marathon is Jan Henning Winschermann, who founded the organizing association rhein-marathon-düsseldorf eV in 2001 for this purpose. The German athletes Sonja Oberem , Carsten Eich , André Pollmächer and Sarah Biedermann also run for this club .

The route is a flat circuit except for the Rhine crossings. The start takes place on Joseph-Beuys-Ufer on the Rhine north of the old town . The first kilometers of the mostly crowded running route lead past the Düsseldorf trade fair , through Derendorf and Düsseltal in the north, then over the zoo district to the city center, where the half marathon mark is on Berliner Allee. From there it goes to Unterbilk and the new port , past the Gehry buildings (km 25) in the direction of Königsallee and Oberkassel .

Since the event in 2005 there has been a separate unicycle rating (→ main article: German unicycle marathon championship ) . The unicyclists started together with the handbikers . The races were in two classes: a standard class (wheel diameter max. 733 mm, crank length min. 114 mm, ratio 1: 1) and an unlimited class (larger wheels, shorter cranks and gear ratios are allowed). The race was rated as the International German Unicycle Marathon Championship. The organizer has not allowed a unicycle marathon since 2015. The hand bikers are also no longer allowed to start.

For the 2006 event, the route was modified according to the half marathon mark: The route to the left bank of the Rhine in Oberkassel and Lörick was via the Oberkassel Bridge north of the old town (km 29), which the runners also passed on the final kilometers past the Tonhalle . Thus the crowded Königsallee was traversed twice (km 27 and km 41), which also had the advantage for the organizers that the earlier traffic restrictions on the Rheinkniebrücke in the south-west could be dispensed with. The destination was still on the banks of the Rhine a few meters from the historic Burgplatz .

The route was changed again for the 2008 event. Immediately after the start of the northern loop, the loop on the left bank of the Rhine joins in Oberkassel and Lörick. The Oberkassel Bridge is crossed between kilometers 9 and 10 and between kilometers 19 and 20. This is followed by the western loop (km 21 to km 32), the southern loop with Königsallee and the destination on the banks of the Rhine.

In 2018 and 2019, the German Marathon Championships took place as part of the Düsseldorf Marathon .

In 2019, a half marathon race took place for the first time as part of the Düsseldorf Marathon.

In 2020, the event was canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic .
