El Barri Gòtic (short form: El Gòtic , Catalan for "Gothic Quarter", Castilian : Barrio Gótico ) is the oldest district of Barcelona , which developed from the Roman settlement of Barcino . It belongs to the Ciutat Vella administrative district (Catalan for "old town").

The district is bordered to the southwest by the La Rambla promenade , to the northwest by Plaça de Catalunya and Carrer de Fontanella , to the northeast by the wide thoroughfare Via Laietana and to the southeast by the Mediterranean Sea.

Most of the architectural monuments date from the 14th and 15th centuries, the heyday of Barcelona as a sea power. The cityscape is characterized by many narrow and winding streets. The cathedral, which forms the center of the Barri Gòtic, is surrounded by many historic buildings. The Barri Gòtic was extensively renovated in the 1920s. Well-known museums and many small shops can be found in the streets of the quarter. Together with the districts of El Raval , La Barceloneta and Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera , it forms the old town of Barcelona.

The area was settled under the rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus . The Roman Forum was located in the place of Plaça de Sant Jaume .

In the Barri Gòtic are u. a. the Ajuntament de Barcelona (city hall) and the Palau de la Generalitat (seat of the Catalan government).
