Herboristeria del Rei
The Herboristeria del Rei is a health food store in Barcelona . It is located directly behind the column arches of Plaça Reial , one of the most beautiful and popular squares in the old Barri Gòtic of Barcelona.
history
The business was founded in 1823 as "Herbolaria Artesana" (herbal specialty shop) and is considered the oldest health food store that still exists today and sells around 200 medicinal plants , honey , spices , food supplements , sweets, essential oils and natural cosmetics in the Barcelona region.
Herboristeria was appointed purveyor to the royal family by Queen Isabell II in 1857 . In 1860 the Herboristeria was extensively renovated. The renowned Spanish painter and set designer Francesc Soler i Rovirosa was commissioned with the work, who shaped today's view with motifs in the Elizabethan style .
On the ornate coffered ceiling there is a light dome with stained glass . A gallery with oil paintings adorns the sales room, and the typical numerous drawers on the sales shelves have been decorated with miniature landscapes in watercolor. In the center of the hall is a marble fountain that was previously used as a place for keeping medicinal leeches , as well as a bust of Carl von Linné , Swedish naturalist and creator of the current system of plant classification. The stone carvings come from the Italian brothers Faust and Àngel Baratta i Rossi and were carved in Carrara marble .
In 2006, some scenes from the well-known film Perfume , directed by Tom Tykwer, were shot in the health food store Herboristeria del Rei.
