The Rotterdam Marathon is the largest marathon in the Netherlands . It has been held annually in April in Rotterdam since 1981 . The event also includes a 5 and a 10 km run.

The route is a flat circuit through the city center. It begins and ends on the Coolsingel in front of the town hall . First it goes over the Erasmus Bridge to the left bank of the Nieuwe Maas , where the first part of the course is completed. After passing De Kuip , the stadium of Feyenoord Rotterdam , it goes over the Erasmus Bridge back to the city center, where the last third of the route is covered on a loop.

Several marathon world records were set in Rotterdam: by Carlos Lopes in 1985, by Belayneh Dinsamo in 1988 and by Tegla Loroupe in 1998.

In 2020, the event was postponed from April 7th to October 25th as part of the COVID-19 pandemic .
