Elena Murgoci

Elena Murgoci (born Florea ; * May 20, 1960 ; † August 24, 1999 in Târgovişte ) was a Romanian long-distance runner .

Life

In 1986, 1988 and 1989 she became Romanian champion over 10,000 meters .

Between 1985 and 1991 she won eleven consecutive marathons , including the Pyongyang Marathon (1986), the Amsterdam Marathon (1988) and the Rotterdam Marathon, as well as the national championship five times in a row (1985-1989). From 1985 to 1989 she set five national records over the 42.195 km distance.

In 1992 she won her sixth national marathon title in 2:29:02 h on a 900 meter short course. In the marathon of the Olympic Games in Barcelona she came in 32nd place. The following year she was fifth at the World Half Marathon Championships in Brussels and won gold with the Romanian team.

In 1996 she was banned for life by the Romanian Athletics Federation as a repeat offender for doping after she tested positive for anabolic steroids in a doping test .

Elena Murgoci was 1.65 m tall, weighed 50 kg and came from Vaslui . She has been trained by Petre Murgoci since she was 17. The marriage between the two, which resulted in a son, was divorced. At the age of 39, she was the victim of a violent crime. Her former partner attacked her in front of her apartment and killed her with eleven stab wounds.
