Abebe Mekonnen (born January 9, 1964 ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner who had great success on the marathon route in the 1980s and 1990s .

The nephew of Olympic champion Abebe Bikila won the Rotterdam and Montreal marathons in 1986 , the Paris marathon in 1987 , the Beijing marathon in 2:07:35 in 1988 (at the same time his personal best and still valid course record) and in 1989 the Boston marathon Marathon . He also won the Tokyo International Men's Marathon three times (1988, 1991, 1993).

In 1986 he was runner-up at the World Cross Country Championships. A success at the Olympic Games was denied to him: At the 1992 Games in Barcelona he had to give up, at the marathon of the 1996 Games in Atlanta he came in 81st place.

Abebe Mekonnen is the runner with the most sub-2:15 marathons in the world. He was able to undercut this mark 32 times in his career.
