The Montreal Marathon (full name Marathon Oasis de Montréal ) is a marathon in the Canadian city of Montreal . It first took place in 1979. After the marathon was no longer held from 1998 to 2002, new organizers took over the event in 2003 and put it on a broader basis. The program also includes a half marathon , a 10-kilometer run, a 5-kilometer run, a school race over 5 kilometers and a children's race over a kilometer.

The route begins on the Île Sainte-Hélène , an island in the Saint Lawrence River . It then leads to the Île Notre-Dame , where the Formula 1 race track Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is circled once. Over the Pont de la Concorde and past Habitat 67 you can get to the old town of Montreal . The route continues through the city center past the UQAM campus and through the Rosemont – La Petite-Patrie district to the Mercier – Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district . There the finish used to be in the Olympic Stadium , since 2011 the race has ended in the neighboring Parc Maisonneuve .

In 2010, a new participant record was set with 21,000 runners. The record winner is the Ethiopian Kebede Balcha , who won the race four times (1979, 1981, 1983 and 1985).
