The Venice Marathon (official name Venice Marathon ) has been held in Venice since 1986 , since 1987 in October. It is one of the three largest marathons in Italy , with up to 8,000 participants.

The route is a point-to-point course that leads from Villa Pisani in Stra to the center of Venice. First it goes along the Riviera del Brenta through the towns of Fiesso d'Artico , Dolo and Mira to Villa Foscari , then via the Venetian districts of Marghera and Mestre on the mainland to the Parco San Giuliano and over the Ponte della Libertà to the main island Venice. The last part of the route leads along the Canale della Giudecca , crosses the Grand Canal at Punta della Dogana on a pontoon bridge that is specially built for this run, passes St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace and ends at Riva Sette Martiri.
