Chuncheon marathon

The Chuncheon Marathon is a marathon in the South Korean city ​​of Chuncheon organized by the Chosun Ilbo newspaper .

history

The first event took place in 1946 with 45 participants on a shortened course (approx. 25 km) with start and finish at the headquarters of Chosun Ilbo in Seoul . The winner in 1:29:24 h was Suh Yun-bok , who won the Boston Marathon the following year . On August 9, 1947, the full distance of 42.195 km was run; Hong Jong-oh came first in 2:57:20.

Between 1950 and 1953 the race was canceled due to the Korean War ; since then it has been held continuously. In 1957, Lee Chang-hoon won the shortened 20 km route , who won the Asian Games marathon in Tokyo the following year . The 1985 winner, Kim Won-tak , also subsequently won gold at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, and the 1987 winner, Kim Jae-ryong , came fourth at the 1993 World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart.

In 1991 Kim Wan-ki set a South Korean record with 2:11:02 in the race now taking place in Chuncheon . In 1995 international elite athletes took part for the first time.
