The Great South Run is one of the premier road races in the UK . The distance is 10 miles (16.093 km). The debut event took place in Southampton in 1990 , and the following year the race was relocated to Portsmouth . It is the first offshoot of the Great North Run in the Great Run series .

route

The flat course begins at the D-Day Museum in Southsea and runs along the coast to Portsmouth Cathedral , the Spinnaker Tower and the naval base with the museum ships HMS Warrior and HMS Victory . After looping through the center of Portsmouth, the route turns east to Eastney and then runs along the coast to the finish at the Pyramids Center, not far from the starting point.
