Turin marathon
The Turin Marathon (official name Turin Marathon ) is a marathon that has been held in Turin since 1991 , usually in April. In terms of course records, it is one of the fastest in Europe.
route
The start and finish of the route, which runs clockwise through Turin and some neighboring municipalities, is in Piazza Castello south of Palazzo Madama . From there, first go over the Via Po to the left bank of the Po . Then up the river to Moncalieri and Nichelino . There the route turns west and leads to Beinasco and Orbassano , where shortly before the half marathon mark the route turns north towards Rivalta and Rivoli . The last third of the route leads westwards via Collegno back to the center of Turin, where the destination is on the west side of Palazzo Madama. A total of 164 meters of altitude has to be overcome.
history
A marathon-like run took place in Turin on October 31, 1897. Cesare Ferrario won in 2:26:45 h on a 35 km long turning point route between Turin and None . The first actual marathon was organized in 1919. On the 42.75 km long route, Valerio Arri won in 2: 40: 47.6 hours , who won the bronze medal in the marathon at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp. From 1921 to 1933 a marathon took place annually on the same route, in which Luigi Rossini (who was the only one who won the race twice) in 1930 set the best time with 2: 38: 23.4 hours.
The marathon of the European Athletics Championships in 1934 , in which the Finn Armas Toivonen won in 2: 52: 29.0 ahead of the Swede Thore Enochsson and the Italian Aurelio Genghini, was to remain the last marathon in Turin for 40 years. It was not until March 31, 1974 that a provincial marathon took place in which Giovambattista Bassi, Marco Carbone and Renzo Musso were the first to cross the finish line in 2:25:00.
On March 19, 1978 and March 25, 1979 a Maratona di Primavera took place on a route from Turin to Sommariva del Bosco . Giampaolo Messina won the first edition with 142 finishers in 2: 21: 26.3 hours, in the second edition with 638 starters Luciano Re Depaolini won in 2:20:25 hours and Elena Dugono, who was one of the first with 2:59:20 Italian women stayed below the three-hour mark. The organizer Lorenzo Abrate withdrew, however, and so there was no marathon in Turin in the following two years.
On March 14, 1982, enthusiasts around Enzo Zanchelli and the Marathon Club set up a new event that took place on a three-lap course on the banks of the Po. Potito Rubbio and Pietro Balbo won together in 2:14:50, but a re-measurement of the route showed that it was two to three kilometers too short. On October 17, 1982, organized by the CUS Torino , another marathon with international participation took place as part of the Campionato Italiano di Corsa , which the Belgian Marc De Blander won in 2:14:57. The event of this series, which was scheduled for October 16, 1983, was moved to Milan , so that in this as well as in the next two years the run of the Marathon Club was the only Turin marathon. In these races, which each had more than a hundred participants, Potito Rubbio won in 1983 in 2:28:25 h and Paolo Faraglioni in 1984 and 1985 in 2:32:08 and 2:33:08 respectively.
After a year without a marathon, today's event was launched in 1987 by Luigi Chiabrera, who is still chairing the organizing committee of the Turin Marathon. At first the run was called Susavigliana and led from Susa to Avigliana . In 1991 a point-to-point route was introduced between Avigliana and the center of Turin. During this time, the number of participants grew from almost 900 to over 2000. Since 1998 the race has taken place on a circuit through Turin and its suburbs.
In 1993, 1998 and 2000 the Italian Marathon Championships were held as part of the Turin Marathon.
