Helly Hansen AS is a Norwegian manufacturer of work , bad weather and sailing clothing . The company name comes from the founder Helly Juell Hansen back of the company in 1877 under the name of Helly Hansen J. Oljeklædefabrik founded to oilskins (originally from linseed oil -getränktem linen manufacture) for seafarers.

From the 1920s the company started using synthetic fabrics, later mainly PVC fabrics . With the boom in oil production in the North Sea in the 1970s, the company developed high-quality work and survival clothing. Since then, the company has also gained a foothold in the outdoor and sportswear market .

The company was bought by the investment company Investcorp from Bahrain in 1997 and sold to Altor Equity Partners in 2006. In 2012, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan acquired a majority stake in the company. In 2018, the Canadian retail company Canadian Tire acquired the clothing manufacturer.
