Runners at the 1980 event

The first marathon of modern times took place on the occasion of the Olympic Games in 1896 . The basis was the legend of the messenger Pheidippides , who died after the battle of Marathon in 490 BC. BC to Athens and is said to have collapsed from exhaustion on the Areopagus after the announcement of the victory news. The winner of this competition was the Greek Spyridon Louis in 2:58:50 h. The length of the route was then approx. 40 km. It was not until 1921 that the International Athletics Federation ( IAAF) determined the official length of marathons to be 42.195 kilometers, which corresponded to the distance at the 1908 Olympic Games in London .

After 1896, no marathons were held in Athens until the 1950s. From 1955 onwards there was one marathon run in spring and one since 1974 in autumn. At the first event in 1969, the Englishman Bill Adcocks ran a time of 2: 11: 07.2 h, which was the course record until Stefano Baldini's 2004 Olympic victory. At the first open competition for women in October 1974, the German Eva-Maria Westphal won .

The current event is dedicated to the memory of the athlete, doctor and politician Grigoris Lambrakis . Shortly before his assassination in 1963, he organized a peace march from Marathon to Athens. The demonstration was banned by the police, so Lambrakis, protected by his parliamentary immunity, set out on his own.

At the European Athletics Championships in 1982 , the European marathon title was awarded to women for the first time. On the route from Marathon to Athens, the Portuguese Rosa Mota won in 2:36:04 h; In the men’s race, the Dutchman Gerard Nijboer prevailed in 2:15:16 h. On April 9, 1995, the last IAAF World Cup Marathon was also held on the course of the Athens Marathon. The winner was the Kenyan Douglas Wakiihuri in 2:12:01 h and the Romanian Anuța Cătună in 2:31:10 h. The marathons of the 1997 World Athletics Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games also followed the classic route. The world champions were the Spaniard Abel Antón in 2:13:16 h and the Japanese Hiromi Suzuki in 2:29:48 h, the Olympic gold medals went to the Italian Stefano Baldini (2:10:55 h) and the Japanese Mizuki Noguchi (2 : 26: 20 h).

The 2010 event was embedded in the celebrations for the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon.
