Shawn Joseph Heins (born December 24, 1973 in Eganville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with Friborg-Gottéron in the Swiss National League A. In the National Hockey League he was active for the San Jose Sharks , Pittsburgh Penguins and Atlanta Thrashers as well as in the German Ice Hockey League for the Eisbären Berlin and Hannover Scorpions .

Career

Heins first played for two years from 1991 to 1993 in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes and Windsor Spitfires . Since he had not been drafted by any franchise of the National Hockey League by the end of the season 1992/93 , the defender joined two more years with the Renfrew Timberwolves in the second Canadian junior division.

For the 1995/96 season, Heins finally moved to the professional camp and played for the Mobile Mysticks in the East Coast Hockey League , before the San Jose Sharks brought him to the end of the 1996/97 season to sign a contract. This put him first in the International Hockey League at the Kansas City Blades , where he reached 50 points in his first full season. After he had spent large parts of the 1998/99 season with the Canadian national team , he came to his first five NHL appearances with the Sharks.

In the course of the millennium season, the Canadian fought his way to the place of the mostly deleted from the squad, seventh defender, which he filled into the 2002/03 game year , although protracted injuries threw him back again and again. In February 2003, the Sharks gave him in a transfer deal to the Pittsburgh Penguins . There Heins ended the season before he moved to the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent in the summer .

When trying to send him to the American Hockey League , because Heins could not fight for a place in the NHL regular squad in the training camp, the New York Rangers selected the defender from the waiver list. The Thrashers were able to acquire the transfer rights to him back four days later through the Waiver Draft and then mainly used him in the Chicago Wolves in the AHL.

After the 2003/04 season , Heins left the North American continent for Europe and signed a contract with the Eisbären Berlin from the DEL . At the end of the 2004/05 season he won the German championship title with the team . Despite the greatest success of his career, he left the polar bears and moved to league rivals Hannover Scorpions for a year . From the 2006/07 season he played for Friborg-Gottéron in the Swiss National League A , where he was team captain between 2007 and 2010 .

In April 2013, after an injury, Heins did not get a new contract with Friborg and initially returned to Florida to recover completely. His jersey number 44 has been banned by Friborg-Gottéron.

Heins held the record for the hardest slap shot of all time with 106 mph (170.6 km / h ) until December 3, 2006 , before he was replaced by Chad Kilger .
