Douglas Wakiihuri

Douglas Wakiihuri (born September 26, 1963 in Mombasa ) is a former Kenyan long-distance runner .

In 1983 Wakiihuri came to Japan and was trained by Kyoshi Nakamura, who also looked after Toshihiko Seko .

He won the marathon title at the World Championships in Rome in 1987 with a time of 2:11:48 h. This was the first title at this distance for Kenyan men at World Championships or Olympic Games and remained the only one until Luke Kibet Bowen won the 2007 World Championships in Osaka . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he won the silver medal behind Gelindo Bordin in the marathon.

He achieved further victories in 1989 at the London Marathon in his personal best of 2:09:03 h and in 1990 at the New York City Marathon .

Douglas Wakiihura today runs safaris for Japanese tourists and has started a career as a musician with CD releases in his home country and Japan.
