Abel Kirui (born April 6, 1982 in Bomet , Rift Valley ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon route . In this discipline he became world champion in 2009 and 2011.

Life

In 2006 he was sixth in the Berlin half marathon in 1:01:15 h and ninth in the Berlin marathon in 2:17:47 h. The following year he won the Paderborn Easter run in 1:01:32 h and was third in the Vienna City Marathon in 2:10:41 h. As sixth in the Rotterdam half marathon, he increased his half marathon best time to 1:00:11 h and was then second in the Berlin marathon in 2:06:51 h behind Haile Gebrselassie , who ran the world record. In 2008 he set a course record at the Vienna City Marathon with 2:07:38 hours.

In 2009 he finished third at the Rotterdam Marathon . With his new personal best of 2:05:04 h, he was sixth in the all-time world best list. Four months later, he secured the marathon title at the World Championships in Berlin . With his winning time of 2:06:55 h, he set a new championship record. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he repeated this triumph in a time of 2:07:38 h. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Kirui won the silver medal in 2:08:27 h.

On October 9, 2016, Kirui won the Chicago Marathon in 02:11:23 h.
