Lelisa Desisa Benti (born January 14, 1990 ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner .

Career

The 2009 African junior champion over 10,000 meters finished third in the 2010 Zayed half marathon and second in the Paris half marathon . At the Ottawa Race Weekend he won over 10 km. He finished seventh at the 2010 Nanning Half Marathon World Championships and won bronze with the Ethiopian team, and came second at the Delhi Half Marathon .

In 2011 a third place in the World's Best 10K victories at the CPC Loop The Hague , the Half Marathon of the Pan-African Games in Maputo and the Delhi Half Marathon followed. In January 2013 he won the Dubai Marathon in 2:04:45 h on his debut over this distance . Three months later, he won the Boston Marathon in 2:10:22 , which was overshadowed by two bomb attacks a few hours later .

At the World Championships in Moscow , he won the silver medal behind Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich in the marathon .

In 2014 Desisa won the RAK half marathon in 59:36 minutes. At the Boston Marathon he entered as defending champion, but gave up the race prematurely.

On May 6, 2017, he started together with Zersenay Tadese and Eliud Kipchoge on the Formula 1 circuit in Monza for “Breaking2” with the running shoe manufacturer Nike's attempt to run the marathon in under two hours. The project failed.

At the 2019 World Championships , the 29-year-old took first place in the marathon on October 5 in Doha , Qatar, with a time of 2:10:40 h.
