Half Marathon World Championships 2010

The 19th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships (officially: 19th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships - Nanning ) were in 16 October 2010 Nanning held. The World Athletics Federation IAAF awarded the event to the Chinese metropolis in November 2008 at a council meeting in Monaco . This was the second time that the World Half Marathon Championships were held in Asia in New Delhi after 2004 .

A total of $ 245,000 in prize money was awarded. Of this, $ 30,000 each went to the overall winners. A team evaluation was carried out, which is formed by the sum of the times of the three fastest runners of a nation. In addition to the men's and women's elite races, an open fun run took place on the same route as part of the event .

The Eritrean world record holder Zersenay Tadese was aiming for his fifth title in a row. In the final stages of the race he led a group of four with the Kenyans Wilson Kiprop , Sammy Kirop Kitwara and Silas Kipruto . One by one, Kipruto and Kitwara fell from the group. In the final sprint, however, Kiprop narrowly prevailed against the defending champion. A few meters from the finish, Tadese had to admit defeat and hobbled injured across the finish line. The team victory went to Kenya for the fifth time in a row and for the 13th time overall.

In the women's race, a top group of five Ethiopians and four Kenyans formed at the beginning, with the Australian Nicole Chapple being the only non-African runner to follow. After a few kilometers, however, they lost touch. From the remaining group, runners gradually fell back until in the end only the Kenyan favorite Florence Jebet Kiplagat and the Ethiopian Dire Tune were together at the top. On the last kilometer, Kiplagat was finally able to launch the decisive attack and secure the victory before Tune. As in the previous year, the individual and team wins went to Kenya again.

It was the fourth time that the two individual winners came from the same country. In 1997, 1998 and 1999 Kenya had both winners of the individual ranking.
