from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2001 Half Marathon World Championships (official name 10th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships ) took place on October 7, 2001 in the English city of Bristol .

The route consisted of a 10.55 km flat course in the center of Bristol that was run twice. The men's race started at 9:30 a.m. and the women's race at 10:45 a.m. The annual Bristol Half Marathon took place on the same route after the World Championship races .

Both the Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie and the British Paula Radcliffe lived up to their role as favorites. When Gebrselassie picked up the pace two kilometers from the finish, only Tesfaye Jifar could follow him, who then had to admit defeat to his compatriot in the final sprint.

In the women's race, defending champion Radcliffe took the lead after 40 minutes and decided the race for herself with a further increase in pace at 15 km. With 1:06:47 h, she improved her own European record by 20 seconds and missed the world record by just four seconds. Only the South African Elana Meyer (who finished sixth in this race) had been faster before.
