Jeļena Prokopčuka (born Čelnova ; born September 21, 1976 in Riga , Latvian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Latvian long-distance runner who specialized in marathon distance . She took part in the Summer Olympics four times (1996, 2000, 2004, 2016).

Career

At the Half Marathon World Championships in 2001 she was fifth in Bristol and third in Brussels the following year. In 2003 she finished seventh in the London Marathon for the first time under 2:25 hours. In 2004 she finished fourth in the Boston Marathon and fifth in the New York City Marathon . In 2005 she won the Osaka Women's Marathon with her personal best of 2:22:56 h. In the same year in New York City she managed to overtake leading Susan Chepkemei in a gripping finish just before the finish line .

In 2006 she finished second in the Boston Marathon, was sixth in the 10,000-meter run of the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg and repeated her victory in New York City. In 2007 she finished second in Boston and third in New York City, and in 2008 fourth in Boston. At the 2016 Summer Olympics , she finished twelfth.

In 2020, she announced in an interview that she had ended her professional career.

Prokopčuka is 1.68 m tall and had a competition weight of 51 kg. She is married to Aleksandrs Prokopčuks , who set the current Latvian national record in 1995 when he won the Baden Marathon with 2:15:56 h. Between 2005 and 2007 she was elected Latvian Sportswoman of the Year three times in a row .
