World Half Marathon Championships 2002

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 11th Half Marathon World Championships (officially IAAF World Half Marathon Championships ) took place on May 5, 2002 in the Belgian capital, Brussels . This is the second time since 1993 that Brussels has hosted the World Half Marathon Championships.

With cool temperatures of around 7 ° C as well as wind and rain, both the men's and women's races on the demanding course through Brussels city center were only decided on the home straight. In the women's category, Berhane Adere , who was third in the previous year, beat Susan Chepkemei , who came second for the third time in a row. Just behind, Jeļena Prokopčuka reached the finish in third place. The team classification (adding up the times of the three fastest runners in a country) was won by Kenya, ahead of Russia and Ethiopia. In the men's race, Paul Malakwen Kosgei beat Jaouad Gharib in the final sprint . As in the previous year , John Yuda Msuri followed at a considerable distance in third place. In the team competition, Kenya won ahead of Japan and Ethiopia.
