Svetlana Vladimirovna Sakharova ( Russian Светлана Владимировна Захарова ; English transcription Svetlana Zakharova , née Wassiljewa ; born September 15, 1970 in Chuvashia ) is a Russian long-distance runner who specializes in marathons .

In 1997, she achieved her first major victory at the Honolulu Marathon . In 1999 she finished third in the Berlin Marathon for the first time under 2:30 and in 2001 in second in the London Marathon for the first time under 2:25. In the same year she won the bronze medal at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton behind Lidia Șimon (ROM) and Reiko Tosa (JPN) and came third in the New York City Marathon .

In 2002 she finished second in the London Marathon, set fourth in the Chicago Marathon with 2:21:31, the current Russian record, and won the Honolulu Marathon for the second time after finishing second in each of the four previous years would have.

In 2003 she won the Boston and Chicago marathons and was ninth at the 2003 World Championships in Paris .

In 2004 she finished ninth in the Athens Summer Olympics marathon and third in the Chicago Marathon.

In 2005 she finished fourth in the Tokyo International Women's Marathon and took the same place in the Boston Marathon.

At the 2007 Frankfurt Marathon she was second behind Melanie Kraus and second behind Irina Mikitenko at the 2008 London Marathon .

The 46 kg light and 1.65 m tall athlete is married to the cross-country skier Nikolai Sakharov, who also trains her.
