Honolulu marathon
The Honolulu Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the world. It has been held in Honolulu ( Hawaii ) since 1973 in December .
organization
The starting signal will be given at 5:00 a.m., accompanied by fireworks on Ala Moana Boulevard. At the beginning you walk a loop through downtown Honolulu, past the Aloha Tower, Chinatown and the Iolani Palace, before after eight kilometers through the hotel city of Waikiki . Passing the beach of the same name, an ascent passes the Diamond Head volcanic crater , Honolulu's landmark, and passes through Kahala , Aina Haina on a wide highway to Hawaii Kai , from where the course takes you back to Waikiki after a short loop. After passing Diamond Head a second time, you reach your destination at the zoo in Queen Kapiolani Park, right on Waikiki Beach.
Despite the relatively flat route, the Honolulu Marathon is not a fast marathon, which is due to the tropical weather and the large time change of 11 hours, especially for the European participants. The winners, especially among the men, mostly come from Ethiopia and Kenya.
The total prize money in 2014 was US $ 150,000, of which US $ 40,000 each went to the two winners. In contrast to the New York City or Boston Marathons, there is no participant limit, and there is also no time limit for the runners, of which the last finishers reached the finish line after more than fourteen hours in 2014. About half of all participants cross the finish line within the first 6:00 hours. Around 60 percent of the runners come from Japan, where most of the city marathons are elite races. The proportion of women in the Honolulu Marathon is comparatively high at 47.3 percent.
At the 45th edition in December 2017, the two Kenyans Lawrence Cherono and Brigid Jepcheschir Kosgei set new course records for both men and women.
