Gianni Poli

Gianni Poli (actually Pier Giovanni Poli ; born November 5, 1957 in Lumezzane ) is a former Italian marathon runner .

In 1980 he was third in the Spanish Open Championship, and in 1981 he set a national record in fourth in the Fukuoka Marathon with 2:11:19 h. In 1983 he was again third at the Open Spanish Championship and improved as seventh at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki, his national record to 2:11:05. He finished sixth in the Chicago Marathon .

In 1984 he became Italian champion. The following year he finished fourth in Chicago and was the first Italian to stay below the 2:10 h barrier with 2:09:57.

After a 13th place at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart, he won the New York City Marathon in the fall . In 1987 he finished fourth in the London Marathon . After he was seventh in the Los Angeles Marathon and fifth in the Boston Marathon in 1988 , he was nominated for the Olympic Games in Seoul , where he finished 19th. At the end of the season he won the Honolulu Marathon .

In 1989 he won bronze at the IAAF World Cup marathon and in 1990 silver at the European Championships in Split . In 1991 he finished seventh in the Turin Marathon .

Gianni Poli was looked after by the trainer Gabriele Rosa. After his career he lived in Toblach , where he organized the Cortina-Dobbiaco Run from 2000 on his former training route, the Long Path of the Dolomites .
