The Long Path of the Dolomites (Italian Lunga Via delle Dolomiti ) or the Dolomites Cycle Path (Italian Ciclabile delle Dolomiti ) is a cycle path on the former route of the Dolomites Railway . It leads from Toblach (Dobbiaco) via Cortina d'Ampezzo to Calalzo di Cadore and thus connects the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno .

The ten completely preserved tunnels along the route are also used, the longer of them are even artificially illuminated.

From Calalzo to Cortina, the bike and hiking trail is almost completely paved . Only the section from Zuel to Chiapuzza (6.5 km) and another approx. Two kilometer long section east of Peaio and Vinigo are no longer used today and lie fallow (cyclists are directed to the parallel state road on these two sections).

Northern section

The section from Cortina to Toblach is mostly designed as a finely gravel and water-bound natural road and is therefore only partially suitable for racing bikes . The highest point is the Passo Cimabanche ( Im Gemärk, 1530  m ), which forms the border between South Tyrol and Belluno. From Cortina as well as from Dobbiaco there are 300 meters of altitude to conquer each .

In winter this section is closed and serves as a groomed cross - country ski trail , where an artificial layer of snow is applied in the tunnels. The Toblach – Cortina cross-country race has been taking place on the first weekend in February since 1977 , with a length of 30 km (Saturday, free style from Cortina to Toblach) and 42 km (Sunday, classic style from Toblach to Cortina).

The Cortina – Dobbiaco Run has been held on this route in spring since 2000 , a people and road run over 30 km from Cortina to Toblach, organized by the former marathon runner Gianni Poli . Poli discovered this route for his training in 1988 and decided to let other runners take part in this experience.

connections

The Drauradweg , which leads east to Lienz , begins in Toblach . Westwards you can take the South Tyrolean cycle path network via the Puster Valley to the Eisack valley cycle path, which connects the Brenner Pass and Bolzano . Since 2015, the southern connection from Calalzo via Belluno to Venice has been part of the new Munich - Venice cycle route. It is very well developed and signposted and only leads over side streets.

Toblach is connected to the Pustertalbahn . A public bus runs every half hour between Cortina and Toblach on weekdays.
