Olesja Leonidowna Nurgalijewa ( Russian Олеся Леонидовна Нургалиева , English transcription Olesya Nurgali (y) eva ; born January 9, 1976 in Kujeda , Perm region ) is a Russian marathon and ultramarathon runner .

Career

She had her first major success in 2003 at the Russian championship in the 100 km road race , in which she took third place in 7:31:14 h, at the same time as her twin sister Jelena , who came second. Shortly thereafter, the monozygotic were twins in Comrades Marathon to: Olesya was second behind Jelena. At the Podgorica marathon , Olesja then won ahead of Jelena.

The following year, the sisters started in the Two Oceans Marathon , the other great South African ultra run. Again, Olesja was only beaten by her sister. At the Comrades Marathon, Olesja was fourth behind the victorious Jelena. At the end of the season, Olesja won the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:29:48 hours, one second ahead of her sister.

In 2005 she was second in the Two Oceans (behind her sister) and in the Comrades Marathon (in which Jelena was third). Then she improved her personal record to 2:29:35 h as twelfth of the New York City Marathon and won the Honolulu Marathon .

While Jelena concentrated on ultramarathons in the 2006 season, Olesja limited herself to starts in marathons. She finished ninth in the Boston Marathon , second in the Turin Marathon and fourth in Honolulu.

In 2007 the twins were on the road together again: Olesja was one place behind Jelena fourth in the Two Oceans Marathon and won the Comrades Marathon, in which the sisters outclassed the rest of the competition by more than ten minutes.

Two more double victories in South Africa followed in 2008: Olesja was ahead in the Two Oceans Marathon and Jelena in the Comrades Marathon. After that, Olesja was second in Frankfurt with her personal best of 2:27:37 h and fourth in Honolulu.

In the following two years, the twin sisters were victorious again as a double: In 2009 Jelena won the Two Oceans Marathon and Olesja won the Comrades Marathon, and in 2010 Olesja won the Two Oceans Marathon and Jelena won the Comrades Marathon. In March 2018, she won the Antalya Marathon .

Olesja Nurgalijewa lives in Perm and is trained by Jelena Popowa.
