Two Oceans Marathon
The Two Oceans Marathon (official name Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon after the sponsor Old Mutual ) is one of the most important sporting events in South Africa . It has been held annually in Cape Town since 1970 . The appointment has been Easter Saturday since 1976. The main route is a 56 km ultramarathon ; in addition, a half marathon has been offered since 1998 .
route
The ultra marathon route begins in the Newlands district, runs between Muizenberg and Fish Hoek on False Bay along the Atlantic Ocean and then crosses the Cape Peninsula via Chapman's Peak. It then runs on the coastal road for a few kilometers past the Atlantic Ocean and from there on to the destination on the campus of the University of Cape Town at the foot of Table Mountain . The name Two Oceans is therefore not entirely correct, as the route only runs along the Atlantic Ocean. The Indian Ocean only begins at Cape Agulhas , which is about 150 km east of Cape Town. A total of over 500 vertical meters uphill and 450 vertical meters downhill have to be overcome, most of them on the second half of the route. Because of the spectacular views, the Two Oceans Marathon is one of the most beautiful runs in the world.
The half marathon route turns west from the ultra route in Wynberg and joins it in the north of Constantia . There are almost 300 vertical meters uphill and a good 200 vertical meters downhill to master.
history
The first run took place in 1970 with 26 participants and should only be a training run for the Comrades Marathon . But then the run quickly developed into an independent event. In 1974 a woman took part for the first time, but did not reach the finish in the prescribed time. In 1975 non-white runners were allowed for the first time. A year later there was the first black winner.
Since 1979, everyone who wins the race three times, has won a gold medal five times or has finished it ten times within the time limit has been honored with a permanent start number in blue.
In 1988 Thompson Magawana set the still existing course record and achieved world best times over 30 miles and 50 km.
Since the end of apartheid , the run has also attracted top foreign athletes and amateur runners. In 1998 a half marathon was introduced, which is now South Africa's largest number of participants, and the time limit for ultra runners was extended from six to six and a half hours. In 2000, the current target deadline of seven hours was introduced.
After a landslide with falling rocks in January 2000, the Atlantic route was closed for several years for safety reasons. In the meantime, elaborate safety fences were erected so that the classic route could be released again.
Conditions of participation and medals
A condition of participation for the ultramarathon is a marathon completed under five hours within the last six months.
There are five categories of medals for the ultramarathon finishers: gold for the first ten, silver for everyone else who stayed under four hours, a Sainsbury medal for runners who took less than five hours, bronze for those who did Beat the original time limit of six hours, and blue for the remaining runners who completed the distance within seven hours.
