Thompson Magawana

Thompson Magawana (born March 23, 1959 , † 1995 ) was a South African marathon and ultramarathon runner .

In 1980 he was South African marathon champion in 2:12:50 h, and in 1985 he was third in the national marathon championships with his personal best of 2:10:39 h.

In 1987 he won the Two Oceans Marathon over 56 km and was again third in the national marathon championships.

In 1988 he defended his title at the Two Oceans Marathon and set the course record that still exists today with 3:03:44 h. His 50 km intermediate time of 2:43:38 h is still the world's best time over this road running distance.

He made it into the top ten two more times in the Two Oceans Marathon: in 1991 in sixth and in 1992 in third. At the Comrades Marathon in 1993 he finished fifth.

Thompson Magawana died of a viral disease .
