Muizenberg is a suburb of Cape Town on False Bay . It has 36,857 inhabitants (as of 2011).

geography

Muizenberg belongs to the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality . It has a long sandy beach. Since a number of great white sharks live in False Bay , there is an observation station in Muizenberg that alerts swimmers and surfers in case of danger. The Zandvlei flows into the False Bay in Muizenberg. The Imperial Yacht Club and the Peninsula Canoe Club are located at the estuary.

history

The Rhodes' Cottage is a small house that Cecil Rhodes , Prime Minister of the Cape Colony , bought as a vacation home. He died here on March 26, 1902. Today the Rhodes Museum is located there.

Het Posthuys (the Post House) is one of the oldest houses in South Africa. It was built around 1742 by the Dutch East India Company as a toll station. One of the first postmen was Sergeant Muys. The name Muysenbergh or Muys Zijn Bergh is derived from him, which later became Muizenberg. The house also served as a police station, hotel and private residence and was restored in the 1980s. Today it is also a museum.

The Battle of Muizenberg was a small but significant military offensive that began in June 1795 and ended with the first British occupation of the Cape of Good Hope three months later. The time of British rule began. Between 1804 and 1806 the cape was under the Batavian Republic . Then the Cape Colony became British again.
