Jelena Leonidowna Nurgalijewa ( Russian Елена Леонидовна Нургалиева , English transcription Yelena Nurgali (y) eva ; born January 9, 1976 in Kujeda , Perm region ) is a Russian marathon and ultramarathon runner .

She had her first major success in 2003 at the Russian championship in the 100 km road race , in which she finished second in 7:31:14 h, at the same time as her twin sister Olesja , who was third. Shortly thereafter, the monozygotic were twins in Comrades Marathon to: Jelena won ahead of Olesya. At the Podgorica marathon , Olesja again won ahead of Jelena.

The following year, Jelena won the Two Oceans Marathon , the other great South African ultra run, again ahead of her sister. There were two more double starts this season: At the Comrades Marathon, Jelena defended her title with a course record for the up-run variant, while Olesja finished fourth, and at the Frankfurt Marathon there was a double victory, in which Olesja was one second ahead Jelena ran in, who set her personal record with 2:29:49.

In 2005 there was another double victory at the Two Oceans Marathon in the order Jelena ahead of Olesja, while at the Comrades Marathon Jelena was third behind her sister. At the end of the season, Jelena was fourth in the Honolulu Marathon behind the victorious Olesja.

In the 2006 season, Jelena started alone in the South African ultramarathons, while Olesja limited herself to the marathon distance. She finished second in the Two Oceans Marathon and again set a course record for the Up Run at the Comrades Marathon .

In 2007 the twins were on the road together again: Jelena was one place ahead of Olesja third in the Two Oceans Marathon and behind Olesja second in the Comrades Marathon, in which the sisters outclassed the rest of the competition by more than ten minutes.

Six more double victories in South Africa followed in the following two years: In 2008 Olesja was in the lead at the Two Oceans Marathon and Jelena at the Comrades Marathon. A year later, Jelena triumphed in the Two Oceans Marathon and Olesja in the Comrades Marathon, and in 2010 Olesja again won the Two Oceans Marathon and Jelena won the Comrades Marathon.
