Herbert Steffny (born September 5, 1953 in Trier ) is a former German long-distance runner , running coach, running book author and qualified biologist .

Athletic career

After success in long-distance running as a teenager, he gave up competitive sport because of his studies in biology . After completing his studies, he started again at the age of 28 with competitive sports and immediately won the Echternach Marathon in 1983. The following year he came third in the New York City Marathon , which was the best place for a German man in this one Competition is.

1985 Steffny was the winner of the Frankfurt-Hoechst Marathon German champion marathon , 1987 German champion in the 10,000-meter race in Gelsenkirchen and 1989 German in Vinsebeck champion in cross-country running . There are also titles in the 25-kilometer road race and mountain run .

He was the only West German marathon runner to win a medal at major international championships when he finished third in 2:11:30 h at the 1986 European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart . Herbert Steffny became a running coach after his sports career. Since 1998 he has written several books (including the bestseller The Big Running Book ) on running training.

Since 1989 he has been managing director of his company for running and fitness seminars, management training and running trips in Titisee-Neustadt in the southern Black Forest, which enables amateur runners to learn from a professional. As a trainer, he prepared the former Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer for his marathon participation. The Ironman European Champion 2009 and 2010 Sandra Wallenhorst was also coached by Steffny in the running area.
