Echternach marathon

The Echternach Marathon is next to the Luxembourg Marathon is the only marathon in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and will take place in October since the 1981st Since the route has partly crossed German territory since 2006, the marathon now also has the title of two-country marathon .

The start and finish is in Echternach . First, two laps are run around the Echternacher See in the south of the city (this part of the route is also offered as a separate 10-mile run), then it goes upstream on the right bank of the Sauer . In Bollendorf you change to the German side of the river and walk downstream via Echternacherbrück to Minden . There you return to Luxembourg territory over a footbridge and walk upstream to your destination in Echternach.

The 32nd edition, which was scheduled for October 21, 2012, was canceled at short notice. In 2015 and 2016 the marathon was held again in Echternach.

history

Herbert Steffny contested his first competition over the marathon distance in 1983 in Echternach. He was the winner in 2:20:05. The later successful ultra marathon runners Burkhard and Birgit Lennartz (then 13 and 15 years old) also ran their first marathon at the premiere in 1981 . As a minor, Manuela Veith (now Manuela Zipse ), who also later became successful, took part in the Echternach Marathon several times from 1983 , most recently in 1992 at the age of 18 as the third of the women in 2:45:51.
