Sandra Wallenhorst (born January 1, 1972 in Arnstadt ) is a former German triathlete and duathlete . The multiple Ironman winner won the Ironman European Championships in 2009 and 2010 and from 2008 to 2018 she led the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

After an early career as a track and field athlete in childhood and adolescence, Sandra Wallenhorst started triathlon in 1996.

After appearing in the German Triathlon League for Hanover 96 and in the World Cup on the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running), the lawyer first ventured into long distances in 2003 and finished in August 2004 Ironman Canada as sixth.

After a viral disease with Pfeiffer's glandular fever (Epstein-Barr Virus, 2005), which is typical for endurance athletes , the birth of her son followed (December 2006). Sandra Wallenhorst ushered in the end of her baby break with three victories in regional middle distances (2007) and third place at the Ironman 70.3 Austria in St. Pölten (2008), before she went back to the long distance and Ironman triathlon project (3.86 km Swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) dared.

At the Ironman Austria in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in July 2008, Sandra Wallenhorst beat the 14-year-old record of the South African and eight-time Hawaii winner Paula Newby-Fraser over the long distance of 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42 km running with a time of 8:47:25 h and thus held the best time of a German athlete at this distance, until Daniela Sämmler undercut it by almost four minutes at the Challenge Roth in July 2018 (8:43:42 h). Sandra Wallenhorst finished her debut at Ironman Hawaii in October 2008 with a bronze medal.

Until 2008 Wallenhorst was trained by Dave Scott . From spring 2009 until the end of her career, she worked with running coach Herbert Steffny . In July 2010 she was able to repeat her title from the previous year at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt with a new course record on the marathon distance (3:00:15 h). Since 2011 she no longer appears in international competitions.

Sandra Wallenhorst lives in Hanover . The lawyer has worked in the Ministry of the Interior of Lower Saxony since 2010 and has been head of the administrative department of the Lower Saxony Academy for Fire and Disaster Protection in Celle since October 2017 .
