The Ironman 70.3 South Africa is a triathlon competition of the Ironman 70.3 series in South Africa .

organization

This sporting event has been held as Ironman 70.3 every January since 2008 in East London in the metropolitan municipality of Buffalo City . In 2004, the Half-Ironman South Africa was held in Port Elizabeth as a forerunner of the Ironman South Africa . In this competition, the athletes have to swim 1.9 km, cycle 90 km and run 21.1 km.

Compared to around 1000 starters in 2009, the number of participants doubled in 2010 to a record number of around 2000 starters.

The British Jodie Swallow has already won the race here seven times.

Course records

The course record has been held by South African Matt Trautman since 2016 with 4:01:52 h, until it was improved to 3:53:50 h in January 2019 by his compatriot Bradley Weiss in the twelfth event .
Among the women, South African Annah Watkinson improved the fastest time to 4:21:14 hours in 2019.

On January 17th, 2010 James Cunnama set a new record on the running track with 1:14:29 hours for the half marathon and at the same time the winner of the women Mari Rabie also improved the record time to 1:19:35 hours.

The German Sandra Wallenhorst was also able to undercut the women's best time on the bike course in South Africa in 2010 - with a new record time of 2:36:53 hours for the 90 kilometers.
