Astrid Stienen (* 11. April 1979 in Rheinberg as Astrid Ganzow ) is a German triathlete and Ironman -Siegerin (2015, 2016). She is included in the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

After graduating from high school Adolfinum Moers in 1999, Astrid Stienen studied human medicine at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf from 1999 to 2004 and at RWTH Aachen University from 2004 to 2005 . She then worked as an assistant doctor at the Aachen University Hospital . In 2011 she was after making a thesis entitled lymphocyte homeostasis in IL-7 deficient mouse model and comparison of lymphocyte subpopulations depending on the age of Dr. med. PhD .

Astrid Stienen only started triathlon training in winter 2011 and started her first race in 2012 at the age of 32. She starts for the DLC Aachen club and in Roth she started the long distance for the first time in July 2012 (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

Triathlon professional since 2013

In Hawaii she was Ironman World Champion in October 2013 in the 30-34 age group.

Since Astrid Stienen has clearly won each of her age group races in which she was at the start, she decided to get a professional license.

Stienen has been a professional triathlon since November 2013, then under the name Ganzow. In June 2014 she was third in the German championship in the middle distance in Kraichgau . In September she was third in the first Ironman Mallorca .

Ironman 2015 winner

In August 2015 she was able to achieve her first Ironman victory in Sweden. Since August 2016 she has been married to Christian Decker, who is also her trainer. In September 2016 she finished fourteenth in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Australia. In October she won the Ironman Barcelona and achieved a personal best of 8:54:27 hours and thus entered the list of world best times for women (64th).

At her second start as a professional in Hawaii in October 2017, the then 38-year-old finished 24th. She has been the mother of one son since November 2018. In August 2019, after her maternity break, the 40-year-old started the middle distance at the Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon and finished 31st.

Astrid Stienen is a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine and lives in Herzogenrath .

  • Astrid Stienen was honored on May 8, 2014 with the “Karlssiegel” of the city of Aachen for her sporting successes.
