The Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon is an Austrian triathlon sport event over the middle distance (1.2 km swimming, 93 km cycling and 12 km running) in Vorarlberg .

From 1993 to 1997, the Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon (3 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 15 km running) was held across the westernmost Austrian state - starting in Lochau on Lake Constance and finishing on the Bielerhöhe in Montafon . The races were organized by Peter Steurer .

In contrast to most other triathlon competitions, the start and finish were not in the same place, but were far apart. Alongside the Austria Triathlon , which has been held at Lake Neusiedl since 1988, this 138 km competition was one of the largest triathlon events in Austria for many years.

National Triathlon Championship on the long distance 1996

In 1996 the Austrian Triathlon Association (ÖTRV) held the long-distance state triathlon championship and in 1997 this competition was the grand finale of the four-race series "Best of the Alps" - together with the Kalterer See Triathlon , the triathlon in the Swiss Spiez and the Allgäu Triathlon .

There was no more competition for 1998, and from 2001 to 2006 Vorarlberg hosted the Brigantium Triathlon, a competition on the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running). On the Swiss shores of Lake Constance , the International Bodensee Tri Challenge was held in Rorschach in September from 2005 to 2007 over the long distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

Resumption in 2012

The Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon was held again after a fifteen-year break on August 26, 2012 and the organizers expected around 500 athletes to compete. Finally, 350 individual participants and 80 relay teams were registered at the start.

In 2014, the Trans Vorarlberg was the fourth race of the cross-border combined classification as part of the Alpenass - together with the Chiemsee Triathlon , the Trumer Triathlon and the Schliersee Alpen Triathlon - and around 1000 athletes were expected at the start in Bregenz.

In 2015, Bianca Steurer and Thomas Steger were able to win the race for the first time since the first edition in 1993. In addition to this middle-distance race, the Raiffeisen Triathlon Bregenz on June 17, 2018, was another triathlon over the Olympic distance. The Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon was last held on Sunday, August 26, 2018. In 2019, the Austrian Triathlon State Championships on the middle distance were held here on August 25th. Thomas Steger has held the course record in 3: 41: 59.8 hours since 2019. In 2019 the Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon became an integral part of the Europe-wide series "European Triathlon League" by "Spirit Multisport". The newly founded series currently includes four triathlon events in four countries:

The 14th edition in 2020 will be held in a different format in accordance with the provisions of the Covid 19 pandemic : the swimming and running competitions will take place in Rankweil on August 30th and the competition will be completed with cycling on September 27th in Nenzing .

Route

The start of the swimming distance is in Bregenz on Lake Constance. The goal was moved in 2012 from the Montafon (Bielerhöhe from 1993 to 1997) to Lech / Zürs on the Arlberg and this competition has been over the following distances since then:

The start of the swimming distance takes place in the Bregenz lido and goes around a marker buoy to the festival area, where the first transition area is located.

The bike route goes from Lake Bregenz across Vorarlberg to Langen , through the Bregenz Forest and over the 1676 meter high Hochtannberg Pass to Lech. A special ranking takes place on the cycle route between Mellau and Schoppernau - according to the title of the Vorarlberg band Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub (through the song "Vo Mello bis ge Schoppornou", in High German "From Mellau to Schoppernau"). The bike distance was reduced in 2014 from the last 102 km to 93 km.

The running route goes over a circuit that has to be completed twice in Lech.
