Zürs (2005) (towards Flexenpass )

Zürs ( 1717  m above sea level ) is a winter sports resort in the municipality of Lech in Vorarlberg . Together with a few other places, it is part of the Arlberg ski area . The Vordere Hasenfluh (2534 m) rises very steeply to the southwest of the village.

history

Flexenpass with Flexengalerie and view of Zürs (from Paul-Pantlin-Weg)

In the beginning, some mountain farmers lived without access roads under difficult conditions in this high alpine region and were often cut off from the outside world. With the construction of the road over the Flexenpass , the village was connected to the road network in 1897.
Already in 1846 the inn "Zürsch" was mentioned in the writings. After its closure, the inn was reopened in 1906 under the name "Edelweiß".
In 1897 the Vonbank family received an annual subsidy of 200 guilders from the state of Vorarlberg for keeping the "Alpenrose" house open to tourists all year round. Thanks to the construction of Flexenstrasse (1895–1897), the ski resort of Zürs became increasingly popular with skiers. From 1923 to 1931 further hotels and guesthouses were built in Zürs. In 1938 the place already had 500 guest beds.

The first ski course for locals was held in 1906 by ski pioneer Viktor Sohm (* 1869; † 1960) from Bregenz - and other pioneers from the Lake Constance area soon discovered the Arlberg and the area around the Flexenpass as a ski area. As a result of organized tourism from the winter of 1923/24, the place flourished - the first group ski course for guests was offered. Albert Mathies founded the Zürs ski school, and Ernst Skardarasy from Zürs was invited to teach in Australia from the Zürs ski school in 1934.

Sepp Bildstein constructed the first drag lift for skiers in cooperation with Emil Doppelmayr . The construction work was carried out by the Doppelmayr company with Sepp Bildstein. In 1937 Austria's first drag lift was built on the practice slope in Zürs. The new technical achievement immediately convinced the skiers and a second drag lift was built on the Schlegelkopf in Lech during the Second World War . The strong development of the Lech Zürs ski area with chairlifts began in the 1950s. In 1951 the lift operation on the Kriegerhorn started. In 1957, the Rüfikopf gondola lift went into operation, creating a ski connection between Lech and Zürs. Thanks to this new ski lift system, the famous ski tour “The White Ring” was created, which runs through Lech, Zürs, Zug and Oberlech.

The feature film Peter Shoots the Bird (1959) with Peter Alexander was shot here. In 2018, the ORF country crime film The Last Problem was created in Zürs under the direction of Karl Markovics .

Over time, more and more modern lifts and hotels were built in Zürs. The Zürs winter sports resort currently has 17 hotels and guest houses, mainly in the 4 and 5 star category.

Culture and sights

The Christ-König-Kirche according to the plans of the architect Hans Feßler was built from 1935 to 1936 and is located in the east of the village. It is one of the remarkable sacred buildings of the 1930s that arose in the Alpine region. The covered corridor leading up to the church is particularly beautiful.

Lifts and cable cars

The lifts in Zürs were built by the companies Doppelmayr , Leitner , Vöest-Alpine, Girak and Garaventa.

Connection railway between Zürs and Stuben am Arlberg

For the 2016/17 season, the aerial tramway at Trittkopf was replaced by two modern single-cable gondolas. At the same time, a connection between the previously separate ski areas of Ski Arlberg East and West was established . Two valley stations were built, one in Zürs, near the practice slope, and one in Alpe Rauz , near the Valfagehrbahn. From these two valley stations you can now reach the Ochsenboden middle station at around 2200  m above sea level. A. , which lies roughly in the middle between these two valley stations. Another cable car (Trittkopfbahn II), which is coupled with Trittkopfbahn I from Zürs, leads from the middle station to the mountain station at around 2400  m above sea level. A. During the new construction of the Trittkopfbahn, a new Albonabahn II was built from the valley station in Alpe Rauz, which is to replace the existing Albonabahn II above Stuben. This project also included the new construction of the practice slope in Zürs, which was completed in the previous year. The fixed 2-seater chairlift was dismantled and replaced by a detachable, child-safe 6-seater chairlift.
