The Alpe Rauz is a small group in the Arlberg region and in the Klostertal in Vorarlberg and belongs to the municipality of Klösterle in the Bludenz district .

It is the starting point of three cable cars ( flex track , Albonabahn and Valfagehrbahn ) and thus the central point of the ski resort Ski Arlberg , which currently (as of 2018) the largest ski area in Austria is.

Geography, weather

The Alpe Rauz ( 1629  m above sea level ) is located directly below the Arlberg pass  ( 1793  m above sea level ) on the border with Tyrol , between the Valluga group of the Lechtal Alps and the Kaltenberg group of the Verwall mountains . The Rotte comprises about 11 buildings.

The Alpe Rauz is 1629  m above sea level. A. one of the highest ski resorts in Austria and the Eastern Alps and comprises around 11% of the municipality of Klösterle. The region around the Arlberg Pass is known for the sudden weather changes even in summer.

Neighboring places:

Zürs / Lech
Stuben , (municipality of Klösterle), district  Bludenz , Vlbg. Neighboring communities St. Christoph am Arlberg ( Landeck , Tyrol )

The Alpe Rauz is also one of the snowiest areas in Vorarlberg. On the Alpe Rauz, at 1650 m above sea level, there is a weather station.

Word derivation

The name Rauz (previously also Rautz / Rutz / Ruz) is probably derived from reuten / rotten / roden (in the sense of tear, tearing roots and tree sticks out of the earth).

economy

Alpine farming

The Alpe Rauz (also Rautz) was bumped into for decades with cattle from the farmers of the Liechtenstein community Gamprin . The alpine buildings are behind the Valfagehrbahn car park at 1628 m above sea level. The Alpe itself was bought for 60,000 crowns on February 23, 1914 ( preliminary contract ), with the Alpe being around 7 km 2 larger than the Gamprin municipality in Liechtenstein. The Alpe Rauz is considered to be Liechtenstein's own alp abroad . Every year around 200 animals, mainly from Liechtenstein , Vorarlberg and Switzerland , are brought to the Alpe Rauz for summer .

tourism

Alpe Rauz is now the predominant tourist destination in the center of the Arlberg region and is part of the cross-border winter sports cooperation Ski Arlberg (with Tyrol) .

The Academic Skiclub Tübingen (ASCT) has a ski hut on Alpe Rauz, which was opened in 1966, the Rudi-Kissel-Haus (also known as the "White House" among the people of Arlberg).

Infrastructure

Alpe Rauz - state road construction yard (built 1939)

In Rauz there is a state road construction yard (1939), which is important for winter service, as well as a transformer station for the Vorarlberg energy network that is central to the region . The three cable cars that lead to the Ski Arlberg ski area are crucial for winter tourism .

Mining

In the early Middle Ages was in the area of ore mined. In the 20th century, only a little stone and gravel was extracted, whereby the quarrying of stone was necessary mainly for the construction of the Arlbergbahn (from 1880) on a larger scale and for the maintenance of the Arlbergstrasse and Flexenpassstrasse.

hunt

The Alpe Rauz is a private hunt with a low density of game (especially chamois and ibex) and is leased by the municipality of Gamprin.

Transport, road connection

The connection via Stuben , the Alpe Rauz, Arlbergpass to St. Anton am Arlberg has been more or less frequented over the past millennia, depending on the political and economic situation ( Altstraße ), although a slightly better transport route is said to have existed in the 14th century ( Nevertheless, Pope John XXIII's wagon was able to overturn on the journey over the Arlberg to the Council of Constance in 1414).

On October 11, 1897, the first section of the new Flexenstrasse ( Lechtalstrasse L 198) up to the top of the pass (through the Flexengalerie to Flexenpass) was inaugurated. This new road connection to Zürs and Lech was built from a junction from Arlbergstrasse (L 197) at Alpe Rauz and laid in the rock and (still) largely exists in this route to this day. In 1909 this road was extended further into the Tyrolean Lechtal (see also connection to the L 200 ). Previously there was only one mule track .

The trunk road 17 (FVS 17) ( Bundesstrasse 17 ) was introduced on January 17, 1932 and led as Reichsstrasse  17 (R 17) from Augsburg, following the current route of the B 17 (without bypasses) to the border with Austria . After Austria was annexed to the Third Reich (1938), the line was extended via Ullrichsbrücke ( R 309 ), Reutte ( R 309 ), Weißenbach am Lech ( R 308 ) and Warth (Vorarlberg) to Alpe Rauz am Arlberg ( R 31 ).

With the Federal Roads Act of 1971 , the pass road became the federal road B 197 (since 2002 state road B 197 ) Langen am Arlberg - St. Anton am Arlberg . The Arlbergstrasse (B 197) is only temporarily closed in winter when there is a risk of avalanches. This road, which runs directly past Alpe Rauz, is prohibited from driving towing vehicles with trailers ( Denzel Alpine Road Scale SG 2).

The Lechtalstraße between the Alpe Rauz and Zürs is closed in some cases in the event of extreme amounts of fresh snow, which means that the winter sports resorts of Zürs and Lech are sometimes no longer accessible by road. Therefore, the road was adapted and partially rebuilt. The stretch of road from the former last bend to the junction to Zürs and Lech on the Alpe Rauz was closed to public traffic (Posteck). The current road leads from the former last bend in five new bends towards the northeast to the Flexengalerie . From there the road splits towards Zürs and towards Alpe Rauz.

Winter sports

Flexenbahn, Albonabahn 2 and Valfagehrbahn valley stations
Since 2016, the Alpe Rauz has been the central point of Austria's largest ski area (Ski Arlberg) thanks to the new Flexenbahn and Albonabahn, as well as the enlarged car park.

Alpe Rauz is the starting point for the Valfagehrbahn chairlift, which has been in existence since 2005, and the two new 10-seater gondolas Flexenbahn and Albonabahn II since 2016 . Since 2016, Alpe Rauz has been one of the central points of the Ski Arlberg ski area, which has since become the largest ski area in Austria . In 2016, the Rauzlift T- bar lift was also built, it serves to improve the accessibility of the cable cars and to develop a short slope. The T-bar overcomes m over a distance of 106, a height difference of 30 hm . The journey from the valley station to the mountain station takes one minute. World iconWorld icon

When the Alpe Rauz was expanded, the parking lot was also enlarged and partially paved . In order to be able to offer winter sports enthusiasts even more comfort, an Intersport branch and a modern ski checkout area were built. An escalator and an elevator take you comfortably from the parking lot to the valley stations.

The Alpe Rauz is one of the starting points of the famous Run of Fame ski circuit .

hike

In summer, the Ulmer Hütte is a base on the Lechtaler Höhenweg and can be reached in around 2 hours from the Alpe Rauz car park. The Ulmer Hütte can be easily reached via the Valfagehrbahn chairlift from Alpe Rauz on the Arlbergpassstrasse, although the Valfagehrbahn is only operated in winter. The valley station of the material cable car to the Ulmer Hütte, built in 1938, is located a little above the Alpe Rauz (Felseneck) (behind the garage with the inscription “Ulmer Hütte”).

The Kaltenberghütte can be reached in around 2 hours from Alpe Rauz.
