history

The first triathlon in Austria was held on July 3, 1983 in Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See . The first clubs were founded in 1985 and in 1986 Austrian athletes competed for the first time in Milton Keynes at the European Triathlon Union (ETU) championship.

With the Austria Triathlon , the first long-distance triathlon (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.195 km running) was held here in June 1988. The Neufelder Triathlon was also held for the first time in 1988 and is therefore one of the oldest races in Austria.

National Triathlon Championships since 1988

In 1988 Austrian triathlon state championships were held for the first time in Mariazell and in the same year the ÖTRV was accepted into the European Triathlon Union (ETU). When a triathlon world championship was held for the first time in 1989 in Avignon (France) over the short distance, which has been known as the "Olympic Triathlon Distance" since the mid-1990s (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running), Wolfgang from Tyrol achieved Kattnig tenth place.

In 1989, the first Austrian state championships on the long distance were held in Podersdort at the Austria Triathlon .

Triathlon European Championships in Austria 1990

On August 26, 1990, the European Triathlon Championships in Austria were held for the first time in Linz and Wolfgang Kattnig from Tyrol was the first Austrian to win a medal here.

In 1991 the ÖTRV was incorporated into the federal sports organization. On July 10, 1993, the first Triathlon World Cup of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) in Austria took place in Seefeld in Tirol . a. the American triathlete and six-time Ironman Hawaii winner Mark Allen at the start.

2004 Summer Olympics

Triathlon became well-known in Austria when the native Australian Kate Allen surprisingly won the gold medal for Austria at the Olympic Games in Athens (2004) and the enthusiasm for the sport, which had hitherto been neglected in Austria, was reflected in numerous children's triathlon Events began to knock down.

In 2008, the "Hütthaler case" also caused a stir internationally: Lisa Hütthaler , State Champion of 2007, was convicted of doping in 2008. Since she had also tried to bribe the doping control authorities to conceal the positive sample, she was also prosecuted and conditionally sentenced to five months on appeal.

The 16-year-old Tyrolean junior squad athlete Pia Totschnig was the first Austrian in the 29-year history of the association to win the ETU European Cup Triathlon among the juniors in October 2016.

In March 2017, the 25-year-old Carinthian Sara Vilic won the first medal for an Austrian athlete when she finished third in Abu Dhabi at the start of the 2017 World Championship series .

  • The Austria Triathlon has been held annually at the end of August in Podersdorf am Neusiedlersee over the long distance since 1988: Swimmers swim 3.8 km, cycle 180 km and run 42.195 km. At the same time, there is also a competition over half the Ironman distance.
  • The Ironman Austria in Klagenfurt has been part of the Ironman World Series of the World Triathlon Corporation since 1998 and in terms of the number of participants (2,467 starters in 2008) one of the largest in the world. Worldwide, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC for short) awards races over a distance of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running. The name is derived from the total distance of 113 km or 70.3 miles for one.
  • The ITU World Championship Series is a triathlon racing series over the “short distance” or “Olympic triathlon distance” that also takes place annually as part of the Kitzbühel Triathlon . The distances for these races are 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running. This World Cup is organized annually by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and was also considered a qualifying race for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
  • The Vienna Triathlon (until 2016 Vienna City Triathlon ) is an event lasting several days, at which competitions are held annually in Vienna over different distances.
  • From 1993 to 1997, the Trans Vorarlberg Triathlon (3 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 15 km running) was held across the westernmost Austrian state. After a 15-year break, the race has been held over the middle distance again since August 26, 2012.
  • The race of the Challenge Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl over the half distance (also middle distance) consists of a swimming distance of 1.9 km, a cycling stage of 90 km and a half marathon (21 km). It was first held in Tyrol in September 2010.
  • The Neufelder Triathlon was first held in 1988, making it one of the oldest triathlon events in Austria.
  • With the Powerman Austria in Weyer , the duathlon over the long distance took place for the first time in 1995 and in 2002 the Duathlon World Championship was held here.

In addition, every year 15 Austrian championships take place throughout Germany as well as well over 100 events with 50 to 600 starters.

Winter triathlon

The state championship winter triathlon was first held on February 24, 2015 in Zeltweg in Styria under floodlights.

The state championships in Faistenau planned for the weekend of 16 and 17 January 2016 had to be canceled due to unfavorable weather conditions and a planned postponement to St. Anna had to be canceled in February.

In January 2017, the state championships in St. Anna had to be canceled again due to lack of snow. A new venue could then be found in Villach and the races took place on March 19, 2017. The Styrian Romana Slavinec was able to secure the title for the seventh time in a row. The state championships in Zeltweg planned for February 2020 had to be canceled due to the warm weather conditions.

elite

The races run over the short distance over slightly changing distances and most recently in 2019 in Villach over 7 km of cross-running, 12 km of mountain biking and 10 km of cross-country skiing. The 28-year-old Styrian Romana Slavinec was able to secure the title for the ninth time.
