Mark Allen (triathlete)
Mark Allen (born January 12, 1958 in Glendale , California) is a retired American triathlete . He is included in the best list of American triathletes on the Ironman distance .
Career
Mark Allen studied biology at the University of California at San Diego . In 1982 he set himself a start at the Ironman Hawaii (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.195 km running): He trained for half a year - but could not finish the race. In the following years he won the Ironman Hawaii six times (1989-1993, 1995).
Allen became known through his duels with his compatriot Dave Scott , whose winning streak he ended with a margin of 58 seconds on his seventh participation in Ironman Hawaii in 1989. In 1989, in addition to his success in the long distance, he was also able to win the first edition of a world championship on the short distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) in Avignon, France. In 1993 he also became world champion in the long distance duathlon in Switzerland.
Together with Dave Scott (won Hawaii six times: 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987), Scott Molina and Scott Tinley , Mark Allen was one of the "Big Four", which at that time made up almost every triathlon among themselves. Over the course of his racing career, which officially ended in 1996, he managed to maintain an average of 90% top three finishes. He started and won ten times the triathlon Longue Distance de Nice , which was the triathlon with the greatest media attention in the 1980s and 1990s, alongside the Ironman Hawaii. His nickname is "The Grip".
In 1996 he ended his active professional career. Allen appeared in the following years as the organizer of some triathlon races (including Ironman Austria ) and gave training seminars. Up until 2002, Mark Allen was married to triathlete Julie Moss (* 1958) for twelve years , whose famous finish on all fours at the 1982 Ironman inspired him to take part in the triathlon.
Mark Allen now works as a book author, trainer and motivational speaker.
