The Irish Eimear Mullan - winner of the Embrunman 2014

The Embrunman is an annual triathlon race over the long distance (3.8 km swimming, 188 km cycling and 42.2 km running) and the Olympic distance in Embrun, France . Furthermore, as part of this triathlon, u. a. a duathlon , a short triathlon and a children's triathlon are also offered.

organization

This triathlon first took place in 1984. With Ironman France , which was first held in 1982 as the Triathlon International de Nice , it is one of the oldest triathlon competitions in France. Since then, the main competition has been held annually on August 15th, the Assumption Day. The venue Embrun is in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .

While in other major triathlon competitions, prize money has been distributed equally between men and women for decades, since the training effort required for a victory is independent of gender, in 2016 only 38% of the total prize money of 122,000 EUR will be distributed to the first women in the Embrunman.

The competition is organized by Gerald Iacono and, with its mountainous route, is considered the most difficult long distance race in the world. Every year the competition attracts an international top field. Even many professional athletes fail to undercut the 10-hour mark. In 2001 the Spaniard Félix Martinez-Rubio was able to undercut the 10-hour mark for the first time and finished the race after 9:57:37 hours.
In 1985 the German Thomas Jeltsch and the Swiss Alain Dallenbach were able to achieve victory at the same time and in 1986 Dirk Aschmoneit . In 1987 the German Rita Keitmann won the long distance race after 14:15:09 hours.
In 1993 the European championship on the long distance was held here. In 1995 and 1998 the German Barbara Alber won the long distance.

The Frenchman and former European champion Yves Cordier is the most successful participant with five wins, two second and two third places; however, it has never undercut the 10-hour mark. The Spaniard Marcel Zamora Pérez can already look back on six wins and a third place and achieved his best time in 2010 with 9:38:49 hours.

Route

  • The swimming distance runs over two laps in an area separated by a dam at the end of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon reservoir, the largest reservoir in the Alps in the French Alpes-Maritimes, on the northeastern bank of which is the small town of Embrun. The start is at 6:00 a.m., and in the dark the route on the lake is marked with light buoys.
  • There are around 5000 meters of altitude to be overcome over the bike distance, and the Col d'Izoard (2360 m) is reached as the highest point .
  • The marathon route runs along the lake, then through the slightly higher Embrun and has to be completed twice. The route has almost 500 hm.

The course record of 9:34:08 hours since 2011 has been held by Frenchman Hervé Faure for men. The course record from 2016 is held by Carrie Lester with 10:46:26 hours for women.

Development of the distances

When it was first published in 1984, the route was designated as 750 meters swimming, 30 km cycling and 10 km running. In the following year it was then doubled in length. In 1986 the route was extended to 4 km swimming, 131 km cycling and the marathon. In 1987 and 1988 the swimming distance was extended to 5 km.
Since 1989 the competition has been offered in the length of 3.8 km swimming, 188 km cycling and 42.194 km running. The Col d'Izoard, a mountain classification of the highest category in the Tour de France , has also been part of the bike course since 1993 .
