Charlotte Morel (born January 16, 1989 in Draguignan ) is a French triathlete and multiple French duathlon and triathlon champion of various age groups. She is included in the best list of French triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

Morel was born into competitive sport, as it were. At the age of three she was already able to swim and when she was ten she took part in the first cross-country competitions of the UNSS ( Union nationale du sport scolaire ). Her younger brother Jérémy (Jey) Morel (* 1991) became the 2009 Cyclocross Junior State Champion and is also active as a triathlete.

Charlotte Morel started triathlon in 2003 when she brought her uncle Didier Morel to the local draguignan triathlon club. After graduating from the Collège in Draguignan in 2004, Morel was accepted into the Pôle Espoir CREPS PACA and attended the Lycée Saint Exupery in Saint-Raphaël . Pierre Houseaux has been her trainer since then .

Morel made her big breakthrough on her homepage in 2006 when she first took part in international competitions and switched to the Olympic distance in Guadeloupe. However, Morel had already started at the European Championships in Greece in 2005, after becoming national duathlon champion in April 2005 (category: cadets), and was considered a medal contender alongside last year's junior champion, Juliette Benedicto. To make room for a French youth triathlete, Morel was registered in the junior class. After a serious bicycle fall, all hopes were dispelled, even if Morel was able to catch up with five fellow campaigners and cross the finish line injured. The following day she took part in the team competition. The French relay team came in eighth (out of eleven), but Morel himself was clearly marked: in the individual ranking she would only have come in 29th out of 33 places. In her blog, Morel skips this ITU debut in Palmarès , but calls it one of the most unpleasant experiences of her sports career. Morel has been a permanent member of the French national team since 2006 and of the French military triathlon team since 2008. From 2006 Morel belonged to the elite team of the northern French club Beauvais Triathlon (until the end of 2012) , for which she competed in several races in the French club championship series together with world stars like Andrea Hewitt . In 2006 Morel graduated from high school (BAC S = scientifique, i.e. sciences de la vie et de la terre ) and enrolled in sports science (STAPS = Sciences et techniques des activités physiques et sportives) at the University of Nice .

In the French club championship series Grand Prix de Triathlon Lyonnaise des Eaux , Morel started in 2006 for Beauvais Triathlon , whose women's team won this club championship series in 2006, 2009 and 2010, but then boycotted the competition series in 2011 and 2012. From 2013 Morel competes for Issy Triathlon in the club championship series.

In December 2007 Morel - like Sylvain Sudrie, Laurent Vidal , Emmie Charayron and Delphine Pelletier - joined the army or the Ecole d'application d'infanterie (= EAI) - at that time still in Montpellier - and thus belongs to the Equipe de France Militaire de Triathlon (EFM). In 2012 the triathlon team was promoted to the rank of Caporal . In 2008 Morel and her EAI team won the gold medal at the World Military Championships in Estonia, in the individual ranking she was fifth. 2011 Morel was in the Military World Championship in Rio (24 July 2011) also fifth in the individual competition, the French mixed team won the gold medal, the women's team was fourth in Germany Morel going since 2011 for EJOT Buschhütten in the Bundesliga at the start , In 2012 she helped the club to win the First Bundesliga .

In 2008 Morel obtained the DEUG STAPS (Diplôme d'études universitaires générales) and in summer 2009 the License L3 in éducation et motricité, in June 2011 she completed her master’s degree in nutritional science (Prevention et Education pour la Santé par l'Activité Physique, Option prevention par l'alimentation et la nutrition) . In the French media, Morel is often compared with her competitor and junior world champion 2009 Emmie Charayron , who is almost exactly a year younger , both of whom were considered great Olympic hopes for London 2012. Triathlète magazine, for example, devoted a double-page portrait to both of them, entitled “Confrontation”.

At the age of 17, Morel, the French duathlon and triathlon champion, also prevailed internationally: at the European Championships in Autun she was 13th in the junior class and seventh at the World Championships in Lausanne. Morel also secured a top ten place at the Duathlon World Championship in Rimini. She won the gold medal at the Swiss sprint triathlon in Walliswil. In France, Morel first appeared in 2006 for the Beauvais Triathlon club , which won the prestigious French club championship Lyonnaise des Eaux in 2006 as well as in 2009 and 2010 . Morel took part in two competitions of this championship series: in Beauvais she was 28th and in Lorient 11th (elite classification).

Morel won both the French duathlon and the triathlon junior championship in 2007 and was also U23 triathlon champion (Espoir), with which she also won the silver medal in the elite category at the age of only 18 . In the French club championship series Lyonnaise des Eaux , Morel competed for Beauvais Triathlon and was always in the top three in her age group: third in Lorient (32nd overall), second in Embrun (6th) and third (8th) in La Baule . At the Junior European Championships in Copenhagen and the Junior World Championships in Hamburg Morel was sixth and eighth respectively. In addition, Morel also competed in the elite category: at a European Cup in Poland and a Premium European Cup in Turkey, she was 11th and 14th respectively. Her traditional summer training camp in Alpe d'Huez crowned Morel with a victory in the sprint Triathlon in neighboring Vaujany (July 29, 2007).

Internationally, Morel was successful in different age groups: At the Junior European Championships in Lisbon she finished ninth, at the Junior World Championships in Vancouver she finished 24th. At the U23 European Championships in Pulpí, she was fifth. in the individual competition and won silver in the team competition. In Luxembourg, Morel took part in her first European Cup (Elite) and won gold. At the Military World Cup in Estonia, she finished fourth in the individual ranking and won the gold medal in the team competition.

She was second in the duathlon championship and first in the junior classification of the short distance triathlon in Embrun. In the club championship series Lyonnaise des Eaux Morel stepped again for the club Beauvais, which carried away the overall victory. In Paris she was ninth (U23: 3rd), in Beauvais eighth (U23: 5th) and in La Baule thirteenth (U23: 5th).

Morel won the Alpe d'Huez triathlon on July 31, 2008 on the short distance (1.2 km swimming, 30 km cycling and 7 km running), after four days earlier in the sprint triathlon in neighboring Vaujany, as in 2007 , had won.

Morel was also successful in France: with her club Beauvais, she won both the club championship series and the club championship in Gruissan. However , Morel did not take part in the Grand Final of the Club Championship series in La Baule (Triathlon Audencia). In addition to Py Bilot (15th), their club relied entirely on the legionnaires Anja Dittmer (1st), Andrea Hewitt (3rd), Hollie Avil (5th) and Vicky Holland (12th). The winning men's team from the Sartrouville Club also started in La Baule exclusively with international guest stars, above all the Brownlee brothers.

In three of the previous Club Championship triathlons, Morel was always ahead of Py Bilot : in Dunkirk in 15th place (U23: 4th) compared to Pys 24th place, in Beauvais 6th place (U23: 3rd) compared to Pys 7th place, in Tours in 10th place (U23: 2nd) compared to Pys 17th place. In Paris, however, Py was better and finished 9th against Morels 11th overall (U23: 5th). On September 26, 2009, the day of the club championship final race in La Baule, Morel took part with her club colleagues Laetitia Duhamel and Sophie Henssien in the tri-relay and on September 27 in the La Baule short-distance triathlon and became - both Paint without serious competition - first.

Morel's last triathlon of the 2009 season was that of Karukera, which she won in 2006 and 2007 without serious competition. She was able to win again in 2009, but this time hand in hand with Alexandra Cassan-Ferrier.

From 2010

After a hugely successful 2009, Morel suffered several injury-related setbacks in 2010. After finishing 22nd at the World Cup in Quarteira, which she rated as disappointing, Morel decided not to take part in the World Cup in Ishigaki, which most European triathletes were unable to take part because of the Icelandic ash cloud and the ongoing restrictions in air traffic.

For Beauvais Triathlon, Morel competed three times in the French club championship series : in Dunkirk she finished 19th (U23: 5th), in Beauvais 13th place (U23: 3rd) and in Paris she was 15th ( U23: 7th), so she was always among the three triathlètes classants l'équipe, to whom her club owes the overall victory of the championship series in 2010. For the Grand Final in La Baule (Triathlon Audencia) on September 18, 2010, she only named her club among the triatlètes invitées U23 , so she could not have given her club any points in the team evaluation - in fact, she was then eliminated prematurely and submitted shortly afterwards underwent knee surgery with one and a half months of rehabilitation at the CERS in Boulouris .

Even if Morel describes the 2010 season as a mauvaise année on her blog , she still achieved two significant victories:

  • at the French state championships in Charleville she won the U23 title and was able to beat her younger rival Emmie Charayron , who was far ahead of Morel in Quarteira and who sensationally won the silver medal at the world championship series triathlon in Spain,
  • Morel won silver at the Premium European Cup in Brasschaat.

On the other hand, Morel had bad luck in the race that was to mark the climax of the season: at the U23 World Championship in Budapest on September 12, 2010, Morel, like many others, fell in the torrential rain on the dangerous bike course and was eliminated. The mentioned race in La Baule was only intended as a farewell round in 2010 and cleared the way for a planned knee operation.

In 2011, Morel remained loyal to her club Beauvais, for which she has been competing since 2006, even though it boycotted the club championship series , so Morel was also absent from the media-effective Grand Prix de Triathlon this year . In Germany, Morel competed for EJOT in the 2nd Bundesliga / North and was first in Gladbeck (May 15, 2012). Together with Scarlet and Mignon Vatlach and Eszter Pap , Morel won team gold and helped the club into the 1st Bundesliga. In the 2011 ITU ranking (Women's Standing), Morel moved up to fourth place of the world's 63 best U23 triathletes.

After a back injury at the end of 2011 and two three-week training camps in Kenya (December 2011) and Lanzarote (January 2012), Morel was able to start the new season with two fourth places in ITU competitions. However, two fatigue breaks prevented their participation in important qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games, so that Jessica Harrison , Emmie Charayron and Carol Péon formed the French women's team and achieved 9th, 18th and 29th places in London. Nevertheless, Morel reached her top form again by the summer and won the triathlon competitions in Alpe d'Huez (July 26, 2012) and in Embrun (August 15, 2012) , both of which were internationally recognized over the Olympic distance . At the World Military Championships in Lausanne (August 25, 2012), Morel finally came third, winning gold in the mixed category for the French team (Equipe de France Militaire de Triathlon EFM) .

The end of the 2012 season confirmed Morel's strong form, which would have qualified it for London 2012 without an injury-related break: Morel won the first division final in Schliersee (September 8, 2012) and thus helped EJOT Buschhütten to overall victory at the World Cup in Tongyeong ( September 22, 2012) Morel finished sixth. Morel's world class was also shown in two tourist triathlon competitions to which she was invited for advertising reasons as a French elite triathlete: at the Trans-Tahitienne (October 27 and 28, 2012), she and her partner Frédéric Belaubre were behind the fresh married David Hauss and Melanie Annaheim Hauss second. As in the previous year, she won the Indian Ocean Triathlon in Mauritius (November 13, 2012).

After two years, through the Grand Prix boycott their club Beauvais forced forced break Morel enters 2013 the first time in the French Club Championship Series Lyonnaise des Eaux , and indeed for Issy Triathlon, where the Spaniard Carolina Routier and the Slovenian Mateja Šimic hard Formed the core of the team consisting of rather unknown runners. Morel's old club, Beauvais , withdrew completely from the elite sport at the end of the 2012 season, so that Morel's search for a new club also included a return to the Grand Prix series. Morel also started again in the German Bundesliga, also together with Carolina Routier, for EJOT Buschhütten .

In July 2015 she became national champion in the triathlon middle distance and in 2016 in the long distance.

Long distance triathlon since 2016

In June 2016 she became national champion in the long distance and in October 2017 the 28-year-old took third place at the Ironman Taiwan (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

Charlotte Morel is in a relationship with the former triathlete and multiple European champion Frédéric Belaubre (* 1980). She lives not far from the high-performance center ‹Creps Paca› in Boulouris.
