Laurent Vidal
Laurent Vidal (born February 18, 1984 in Sète ; † November 10, 2015 in Gigean ) was a French triathlete . He was French triathlon champion (Olympic distance) in 2009 and 2011, U-23 champion in 2006 and Olympic participant in 2008 and 2012.
Career
He belonged to the military triathlon team (Equipe de France) that had moved to Draguignan at the military school ( Ecoles militaires de Draguignan EMD) and was caporal in the French army. In Germany, Vidal competed in the first Bundesliga for the EJOT Team TV Buschhütten .
On his ITU debut in 2002, Vidal immediately became Vice Junior European Champion. In 2003 he was fourth at the Junior World Championships. In August 2008 he represented France at the Olympic Games in Beijing, where he was 36th. In the nine years from 2002 to 2010, Vidal took part in 53 ITU competitions and achieved 25 top ten placements. In 2010 he opened the season with a gold medal at the Oceania Championships.
He finished seventh at the 2011 European Championships in Spain, sixth at the World Series Triathlon in London and at the Sprint World Championships in Lausanne. He was two out of three times ahead of his biggest French competitor David Hauss , who finished 13th, 7th and 4th. Vidal had to give up at two world championship triathlons because he suddenly lost consciousness: in Kitzbühel (August 14, 2010) while running and in Sydney (April 9, 2011) during a cycling race, where he fell badly. He finished the 2011 World Championship racing series in seventh place.
In addition to the ITU competitions, Laurent Vidal also took part in the French club championship series Lyonnaise des Eaux and started together with Emmie Charayron and Fabienne St. Louis for the Lagardère Paris Racing club . Thanks to his sixth place at the World Series Triathlon in London (August 7, 2011), he was already nominated for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he finished fifth. He won the Alpine Triathlon in Schliersee in 2012 and 2013 .
Vidal completed a bachelor's degree in sports management and most recently lived in Sète and Christchurch , the New Zealand hometown of his partner Andrea Hewitt (* 1982), for half a year .
In April 2014, he suffered a heart attack while swimming and had to stop doing sports. In November 2015 he died at the age of 31 after a cardiac arrest.
