qualification
Qualification criteria
110 athletes took part in the competitions, 55 women and 55 men each. One quota place was reserved for women and men for the host's NOK and the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was able to issue up to two quota places per gender by invitation. The eight most successful NOKs were able to use three athletes each, all others a maximum of two. The following qualification criteria applied equally to women and men:
- Five quota places were given to the winners of the continental qualifying competitions, three more to the top three athletes of the international qualifying competition on August 6th and 7th, 2011 in London.
- 39 athletes were awarded via the ITU Olympic qualification ranking, which included the most important competitions between June 1, 2010 and May 31, 2012.
- A quota place was finally given to the NOK of each continent, which was best placed in the ranking list and which had not yet achieved a quota place.
- If an athlete who had already won a quota place achieved another placement that guaranteed a quota place, the next athlete without a quota place received this.
