At the XXX. 2012 Olympic Games in London found 13 competitions in boxing instead, ten for men and three for women. The venue was the Exhibition Center London at the Royal Victoria Dock in the London Borough of Newham .

For the first time women boxed for Olympic honors at the Olympic Games . The IOC had decided at its meeting in Berlin on 13 August 2009, the inclusion of three women's competitions in the program, namely flyweight, light welterweight and light heavyweight. Instead, it canceled a weight class for men with featherweight.

Disputed judgments

The outcome of the bantamweight fight between the Japanese Satoshi Shimizu and Məhəmməd Əbdülhəmidov from Azerbaijan turned into a real scandal . Because although Shimizu had his opponent on the ground six times, Abdulhamidow was no longer counted and finally even declared the point winner (22:17). After the protests by the Japanese, the world boxing federation AIBA overturned the verdict and determined Shimizu to be the winner through superiority. The Turkmen referee Isanguli Meretnyazov, who led the fight, and the Azerbaijani AIBA official Aghajan Abiyew were suspended.

The German referee Frank Scharmach was also suspended for five days because he had controversially warned the Iranian Mazaheri three times and then disqualified in the heavyweight round of 16 between Ali Mazaheri and José Larduet . According to AIBA, Scharmach should take a "pause for thought" and study the verdict in detail. Since the Iranian team apparently failed to lodge a formal objection to the result in time, the Cuban won the day.

The welterweight fight between the US American Errol Spence and the Indian Vikas Krishan Yadav was also canceled by the AIBA. Yadav had initially been declared the point winner (13:11), but after evaluating the video recordings, the AIBA corrected the outcome of the fight into a 15:13 point victory for the American. According to AIBA, several fouls by the Indian and the resulting point gains for Spence were not taken into account.

The departure of the German middleweight Stefan Härtel against the Englishman Anthony Ogogo in the quarter-finals also caused a stir . The President of the German Boxing Association Jürgen Kyas spoke of a match result influenced by home advantage and a violation of neutrality by the referees. The Englishman's victory was not in question, but the fact that he was awarded all three rounds, although Härtel clearly dominated the second round in the German opinion.

Qualification criteria

There will be 286 athletes participating in the competitions, including 36 women and 250 men. Six quota places were reserved for the host's NOK and 19 quota places are awarded at the invitation of the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateure (AIBA) to NOKs who were unable to achieve quota places after the qualification phase. Each NOK was allowed to nominate a maximum of one athlete per weight class.

The only qualifying competition for women was the World Championships in 2012 , with the eight best athletes in each weight class winning a quota place, but only within the framework of a continental maximum quota. Africa had five quota places, America eight, Asia eight, Europe twelve and Oceania three. The world championships took place in Qinhuangdao from May 9th to 20th, 2012 . AIBA awarded eleven quota places by invitation after the World Championships, one starting place was reserved for the host NOK if no athlete could have qualified regularly.

In the men's first qualification phase from September 22 to October 10, 2011 at the World Championships in Baku, 92 quota places were awarded to the athletes in places one to ten and places one to six for the two heaviest weight classes. In the second qualification phase, 140 quota places were allocated at continental tournaments in spring 2012. Africa had a total of 52 quota places at world championships and continental qualifications, America 54, Asia 56, Europe 78 and Oceania ten. Five quota places were also awarded for the first time in May 2011 at the World Series of Boxing (WSB). After the completion of the continental qualifying competitions, the AIBA awarded seven quota places by invitation.

The five quota places awarded by the WSB were won by the associations of Algeria, France, Italy, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Due to the differences in the division of the weight classes, the associations had to determine in which Olympic weight class they would take the quota place. In June 2012 the women received an invitation from Brazil, Bulgaria, North Korea, China, the USA, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Romania, Kenya and Canada and the men from Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Montenegro, Honduras, Panama, Angola and Iraq each have a starting place. Burkina Faso and Mali returned their quota places to the world association AIBA, the starting places were reassigned to Cameroon and Niger. In total, athletes from 79 NOKs will take part in the competitions.
