Karolina Michalczuk (born December 6, 1979 in Brzezice near Lublin ) is a Polish boxer . She became the 2008 amateur bantamweight champion .

Career

Karolina Michalczuk grew up in a family in the town where she was born, in which her father died early. She has three brothers and had to assert herself against them as a child. She succeeded because she was fearless from an early age and, mostly playfully, "took up the fight" against her older brothers. As a teenager she was interested in various martial arts. She came to boxing when Adam Sawicki discovered her boxing talent in physical education at the vocational school for mining in Lublin. This then became her first coach at the sports club Paco Lublin . Wladyslaw Maciejewski later joined the national team as a coach.

In 2003 she became the first Polish featherweight champion . This title was followed by a further seven by 2010, from 2005 all in bantamweight. In 2003 Karolina Michalczuk began her international career. She started at the European Championship in Pécs / Hungary in the featherweight division and finished there behind the Norwegian Henriette Kittel and in front of Myriam Chomaz, France and Swetlana Kulakowa from Russia, the 2nd place and thus became Vice European Champion. She won her first international title at the 2005 European Championships in Tønsberg / Norway. She won there in bantamweight over Arsalene Ahlam from France, Mihaela Cijveschi , Romania and Seda Aygun from Turkey and became the new European champion. In the same year the second world championships for women took place in Podolsk . Karolina Michalczuk defeated Vanessa Juarez from the United States clearly on points in her first fight (31:13), but then lost to Mihaela Cijveschi, who she had defeated at the European Championships in 2005, by breaking off in the 2nd round, with which she retired and only finished 5th. Cijveschi then even became world champion.

In 2006 she met at the Ahmet Comert tournament in Istanbul in the semi-finals of the bantamweight division for the first time on Sofia Otschigawa from Russia and lost this fight on points. Sofia Otschigawa became one of her main competitors in the next few years. The next time they met at the European Championships in September 2006 in Warsaw, where Karolina Michalczuk won the semi-finals over Sofia Otschigawa on points (25:20). This fight had cost her a lot of substance, so that she surprisingly lost the final fight against Kari Jensen from Norway on points (27:35). After 2003, she became vice European champion for the second time. In November 2006 Karolina Michalczuk met Sofia Otschigawa again in the final of the World Cup in New Delhi and this time she was clearly defeated on points (2:21). Before the European Championships in Warsaw, Karolina Michalczuk won the bantamweight championship of the European Union in Porto Torres in Sardinia . She was able to retaliate against Mihaela Cijveschi when she defeated them on points in the semifinals of this championship (21:17).

At the 2007 European Championships in Vejle / Denmark, she met Sofia Otschigawa again in the semifinals and was defeated again on points (4:14). So she finished 3rd in this championship. The year 2008 turned out to be the most successful year in Karolina Michalczuk's career. She won again at the championship of the European Union, which took place in Liverpool and won there a. a. over the strong English Nicola Adams (13: 9) and over Lorna Weaver from France (13:49 on points. At the World Championships in Ningbo / China in November 2008, she profited from Sofia Otschigawa being promoted to featherweight. She defeated in Ningbo, however, with Hai Lam-Ho from Hong Kong , Ayako Minowa from Japan , Zhang Qui from China and Nicola Adams four strong opponents and deservedly won the world title .

In 2009 she had another success at the European Championships in Nikolajew / Ukraine, because there she was again European champion in bantamweight. The young Swede Helene Falk opposed her greatest resistance in the semifinals, against whom she only narrowly won with 5: 3 points. In the final, she managed to win points over Ivanna Krupenia from Ukraine, against whom she won 8: 3 points. In 2010 the highlight of the year took place in Bridgetown / Barbados . It was the world championships where she started again in bantamweight. There she won points over Oksana Korojewa from Kazakhstan (12: 2), Leiryn Flores from Venezuela / 14: 2) and Ayşe Taş from Turkey (9: 3). In the semifinals, however, she lost to Jelena Saweljewa from Russia on points (5:14). She could not defend her world championship title from 2008, but the runner-up world title 2010 was a great success for her.

In November 2010 Karolina Michalczuk started the so-called "Womens Intern. Dual Series" in Oxnard in the United States in the flyweight division . The background for her start in flyweight was that in 2012 at the Olympic Games in London for the first time women's competitions in fly, light and middleweight will take place. If she wants to start there, she either has to train into the flyweight or grow into the lightweight. She obviously decided to shed another three kilograms, which should not be easy for her. In Oxnard there were fights for four consecutive days without a tournament winner being determined. She defeated the Americans Cynthia Morena (34:20), Christina Cruz (10: 7) and Tyriesha Douglas (20: 8) on points, but lost her last fight against Alex Love from the United States with 16: 17 points.
