Clemente Russo (* 27. July 1982 in Caserta ) is an Italian boxer in the heavyweight division .

successes

His greatest successes in the youth field were winning a bronze medal at the 1997 European Cadet Championships and winning another bronze medal at the 2000 World Junior Championships .

In the adult field, Russo was Italian light heavyweight champion in 2001 and 2003, and Italian heavyweight champion in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. His first significant success was winning the gold medal at the CISM 2004 military world championships in the USA . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he lost the first fight against Andre Ward .

In 2005 he won the EU championships in Italy and the Mediterranean Games in Spain , including victories against Vedran Đipalo and Alexander Powernow . At the EU Championships in Ireland in 2007 he defeated Terwel Pulew , John M'Bumba and Krzysztof Zimnoch before losing to Helias Pavlidis in the final.

Then he started at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , where he was able to prevail against Danny Price, Lukáš Viktora, Alexander Powernow, Milorad Gajović , Yushan Nijiati and Rachim Tschachkijew and became world champion. He was then considered one of the favorites at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and was able to beat Wiktar Sujeu , Oleksandr Ussyk and Deontay Wilder , before losing to Rachim Tschachkijew in the final this time and winning the Olympic silver medal. In 2009 he won the Mediterranean Games in Italy.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , for which he had qualified through his successes in the World Series of Boxing , he repeated winning the silver medal after losing to Oleksandr Ussyk in the final this time. World Series of Boxing

Russo has been fighting in the World Series of Boxing since 2010 and has won 23 of 28 fights so far. He defeated Josip Filipi , Chouaib Bouloudinats , Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov and Tony Yoka twice, among others .

He fights for the Milano Thunder team and remained undefeated in six fights in the 2010/2011 season. With this result he also qualified for the final of the individual championship of the World Series, the fight between the two most successful fighters in a weight class. In this he beat Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov by a unanimous judge's judgment and thus secured a starting place at the 2012 Olympic Games .

In the 2011/2012 season, Russo won five out of five fights for the Italian team during the group stage of the World Series of Boxing and also his fights in the quarterfinals against Paris , in the semifinals against Baku and in the final against Moscow , making him a crucial part of winning the Had championship through Milan.

In the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons Russo was used in four fights each. He won three or two of these fights.

AIBA Pro Boxing (APB)

Since October 2014 Russo has started in the newly founded professional area "APB" of the IOC recognized world association AIBA. Russo starred in the boxing film Tatanka Skatenato, based on a story from Beauty and Hell by Roberto Saviano , which premiered on May 6, 2011.
