José Ángel Larduet Gómez (born February 23, 1990 in Guamá , Santiago de Cuba Province ) is a Cuban boxer . Larduet was a 2009 Pan-American Champion, a bronze medalist at the 2009 World Championships and a participant in the 2012 Olympic Games .

Career

In 2007 Larduet took part in the middleweight division for the first time in the Cuban Championships, but was eliminated in the second round. The following year he won the bronze medal of the national championships and was junior world champion (U19) in the light heavyweight division (-81 kg).

At the national championships in 2009 Larduet was Cuban champion for the first time and won the Pan American championships with a final victory over Jeison Monroy, Colombia (RSC 3rd). In the same year he celebrated his greatest success so far at the World Championships . After victories over Robert Brant, USA (17: 8), in the round of 16 over Revaz Karelishvili, Georgia (15: 5), and in the quarter-finals over Carlos Gongora , Ecuador (10: 6), he reached the semi-finals, which he beat against the later World champion Artur Beterbijew , Russia (13:10), lost and won the bronze medal.

In 2010 Larduet switched to the heavyweight division (-91 kg) and had to admit defeat to the 2009 World Cup runner-up Osmay Acosta in the finals of the Cuban championships (9: 1). Nevertheless, he was nominated for the World Championships in 2011 and reached the quarter-finals after victories over Lubos Velecky, Czech Republic (RSC 1st), Kenneth Egan , Ireland (AB 3rd), and in the round of 16 over Stjepan Vugdelija, Croatia (RSC 1st), which he lost against Teymur Məmmədov , Azerbaijan (24:20) and thus finished 5th.

With this placement, Larduet also qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games , where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals after defeating Ali Mazaheri , Iran (DQ 2nd), against the later silver medalist Clemente Russo , Italy (12:10). Both fights were extremely controversial: After examining the video recording, the German referee Frank Scharmach, who wrongly disqualified Mazaheri, was suspended by the world boxing association AIBA for five days. However, since the Iranian federation protested too late, the combat rating for Larduet remained in effect. After Larduet's defeat by Russo, the Cuban federation protested unsuccessfully after Russo could only defend his points lead from the first two rounds in the third round with the help of repeated brackets.
