Carlos Góngora

Carlos Góngora Mercado (born April 25, 1989 in Esmeraldas ) is an Ecuadorian boxer . Góngora was a participant in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and winner of the 2010 South American Games .

Career

Carlos Góngora started boxing in Napo at an early age. He developed quickly and has been training in the training center of the Ecuadorian Boxing Association in Quito since he was 16 . His trainer is Cirilo López.

At the age of 17 he took part in the Pan-American Junior Championship in Buenos Aires , where he won the middleweight division with victories over Félix Valera from the Dominican Republic and Pablo Farías from Argentina. In the same year he participated in several senior tournaments. So he won z. B. in the middleweight division at the Copa Romana in La Romana (Dominican Republic) with victories over L. González from Venezuela, Wilky Compfort from Haiti and Argenis Núñez from the Dominican Republic. Also at the South American Games in Buenos Aires in 2006 he started with the seniors and won there in the middleweight division against Pedro Calla from Peru, before he was defeated on points in the final against the world class boxer Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela.

At the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 he fought in the middleweight division and landed an unexpected victory over Alfonso Blanco , which was clear with 20: 6 goals. In the semifinals of this championship he lost to Emilio Correa junior from Cuba and came in 3rd place. At the world championship of the same year in Chicago Carlos Gongora won in the middleweight division over Ivano del Monte from Italy (29:22) and over Ezequiel Maderna from Argentina (18:13) each on points. In the second round he was defeated by the experienced Russian Matwej Korobow , the 2005 world champion , by breaking off in the third round.

In 2008 Carlos Góngora qualified in Port of Spain to take part in the Olympic Games in Beijing . He reached the final in qualifying tournament, in which he lost to Emilio Correa on points. In Beijing he showed very good performance in the middleweight division and won over Konstantin Buga from Germany and Georgios Gazis from Greece clearly on points. In the quarter-finals, however, he was somewhat surprisingly defeated by Indian Vijender Kumar , with which he was eliminated and finished in 5th place.

In 2009 Carlos Góngora moved to the next higher weight class, the light heavyweight. In this weight class he started at the World Cup in Milan , where he lost to José Larduet from Cuba in the quarterfinals after victories over the Italian Gianluca Rosciglione and the Algerian Abdelhafid Benchabla on points (6-10) .

At the South American Games 2010 Góngora won the gold medal with a final victory over Roamer Angulo, Colombia (9: 1). That year he also fought for Los Angeles in the World Series of Boxing , winning two of three fights.

In 2011 Cóngora started at the Pan American Games , but failed in the first fight against the later gold medalist Julio César La Cruz , Cuba (19: 9). It was similar for him at the World Championships this year, where he lost in the preliminary round to Yamaguchi Falcão , Brazil (25:18).

In order to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games despite these failures , Góngora took part in the American Olympic qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished third and thus qualified. The Olympic Games in London ended for him after a narrow victory over Vatan Huseynli , Azerbaijan (9: 8), but already in the round of 16 with a defeat against the later silver medalist Ädilbek Nijasymbetow , Kazakhstan (13: 5).
