Yordanis Despaigne Herrera (born February 12, 1980 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban boxer . He won bronze medals in the middleweight division at the 2001 and 2003 World Amateurs Championships.

Career

Yordanis Despaigne started boxing as a teenager. He developed quickly and was one of the best Cuban boxers even as a junior. He was then delegated to the performance center of the Cuban Boxing Association in Santiago de Cuba.

In 1998 he started at the Pan American Junior Championship in Toluca / Mexico , where he won the light middleweight title with a victory in the final over the Argentine Ariel Avales. In the same year he was also at the start of the Junior World Championship in Buenos Aires . He won his first fight there against Claudio Abales from Argentina , but was already defeated in the quarterfinals against Sergei Kostenko from Ukraine on points and came in 5th place.

After his junior years, Yordanis Despaigne needed until 2001, until he also reached the top class in Cuba among the senior classes. He was Cuban middleweight champion for the first time that year by defeating Jorge Gutiérrez on points (10: 8) in the final . At the international tournament of the Cuban boxing association Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Holguín , he won the final again over Jorge Gutiérrez and was then used at the World Cup in Belfast . There he reached the semifinals, in which he lost on points against Andrei Gogolew from Russia .

In 2002 Yordanis Despaigne was again Cuban middleweight champion by winning points in the final over Manuel Drake (20: 8). He also won the international tournaments in Cuba, the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Pinar del Río and the 1st Cuban Olympiad in Havana . In both tournaments he won it in the final over his compatriot Sullivan Barrera on points.

At the Cuban Championship in 2003 he won the middleweight finals over Zuris Aguillar and won his third title. He also won again at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Havana. In the final battle he again beat Sullivan Barrera on points. In 2003 Yordanis Despaigne competed in Germany for the first time . At the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) he lost the final fight in the middleweight division against the German Robert Woge on points. Also at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo / Dom. Rep., He got into the final, in which he surprisingly lost on points against the local Juan Ubaldo. For the second time he then represented Cuba in Bangkok at a world championship for amateurs in the middleweight division. He won over Mamadou Diambang from France (36:17), Tomas Adamek from the Czech Republic (27:20) and the 2001 vice world champion Utkirbek Gaydarow from Uzbekistan (33:13) on points. In the semifinals he lost to the 2001 world champion Gennady Golovkin from Kazakhstan just on points (26:29) and thus finished third, just like two years ago.

In 2004, Yordanis Despaigne was absent from the Cuban championship. But he was back at the Chemistry Cup in Halle / Saale and had to admit defeat to a German boxer, Lukas Wilaschek , on points in the final. But he won the second Cuban Olympiad in the middleweight division with a superior point win (23.7) over Yunier Dorticós . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he started the tournament by winning points over Jean Pascal from Canada (36:24) and Karoly Balzsay (38:25) from Hungary . In the quarter-finals he was defeated by the American Andre Dirrell , whom he had defeated at the Pan American Games in 2003, just by points (11:12) and was eliminated. Together with three other boxers he only came in 5th place.

In the next few years, Yordanis Despaigne found it difficult to stay at the top in Cuba. From 2005 he replaced him in middleweight Emilio Correa as a representative of Cuba at international championships. Emilio Correa also defeated him in the final of the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in 2005 in Cienfuegos on points (15: 9). In 2006 he managed to become Cuban middleweight champion again. He defeated Emilio Correa clearly on points (26:11). In 2006 he also won the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Cartagena / Colombia with victories over Alexander Brand from Colombia (9: 8) and Andrew Fermin from Trinidad and Tobago (3: 1).

In 2007 Yordanis Despaigne was not at the start of the Cuban championship. At the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Santa Clara he was already defeated in the quarter-finals against Emilio Correa (10:15) on points.

Since the beginning of 2008 he started in the light heavyweight division. His attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games this year in Beijing practically failed at the Cuban championship of that year, because he lost there in the final battle against the only 18-year-old newcomer Julio Cesar de la Cruz on points (9:14) . The Cuban Boxing Association then relied on de la Cruz in the following qualifying tournaments for the 2008 Olympic Games, but surprisingly he did not qualify. For this reason there was no boxer from Cuba at the Olympic Games in Beijing in the light heavyweight division. Yordanis Despaigne won in 2008 at the IV Cuban Olympics in Havana in the final fight of the light heavyweight division over Dairon Lester Jiménez on points.

Despaigne arrived in Miami in February 2009 after successfully escaping from Cuba, along with the other Cuban boxers Guillermo Rigondeaux , Yudel Johnson and Yunier Dorticós . All three boxers were initially signed as professionals at the purely Cuban boxing stable Caribe Promotions in Miami.

Despaigne made his professional debut on May 22, 2009 in Miami with a points win over Robert Campbell. His career ended (as of 2014) with the second defeat in the eleventh fight, in December 2011 against Cornelius White.
